Philtrum Piercing

Hi Buddies, Medusa piercings are piercings that go through the cupid’s bow of your lip, which is also known as the philtrum. That is why, you will see that these are more commonly referred to as a philtrum piercing.

The Medusa piercing, also known as a philtrum piercing, is a type of facial piercing placed through the philtrum, the small indent just above the upper lip and directly under the nose. It's named after the Greek mythological creature Medusa, often associated with snakes and her gaze turning people into stone.

The piercing typically involves a small stud or a piece of jewelry inserted vertically through the philtrum, with the bead or decorative end visible above the upper lip. It's a relatively popular piercing choice because of its placement and aesthetic appeal, adding an accent to the face.

They are a striking addition to your face and look dazzling if you decide to use jewelry like gems or charms. But how long does it take to heal, and is the hole permanent? Let’s answer these questions.

How Are Medusa Piercings Done And How Long Do They Take To Heal?

The process of getting a Medusa piercing begins with you discussing which type of jewelry you'd like. Then, your piercer will mark on top of your philtrum with a non-permanent marker, and push a needle from the inside of your lip.

Considering your lips are filled with nerve endings, a philtrum piercing will hurt more than other types of piercing. If you are too worried, then consider using a numbing cream.

After you're done with the procedure, you'll have an initial swelling for several days. This swelling can take up to a few weeks to go away. As for the whole healing process, it takes around 2 to 3 months. However, if you do not maintain good oral hygiene and don't properly carry out aftercare procedures, then it can take even longer.

Avoid baths, and keep the piercing away from the water when showering as you want to keep it as dry as possible. Clean it regularly with the saline solution provided by your piercer, and also avoid hot or spicy foods. If you are not careful with the piercing, then there is a risk of having an infection. Severe swelling and redness, discharge of greenish or yellowish pus, or a considerable amount of bleeding are all signs of an infection, so look out for those.

Is The Philtrum Piercing Permanent?

If you have fully healed, then chances are that the hole will not close even after you take out the jewelry. However, if you decide that you do not want it, then taking out the jewelry even after a few months can give you a chance of closing the hole. The hole can close even after several months and proper healing, although it is very rare. So if you are unsure about getting the piercing, then think very carefully, because it is highly likely that it is permanent.

When considering a Medusa piercing or any facial piercing, it's recommended to research reputable piercing studios and consult with a professional piercer to ensure it's a suitable option for your lifestyle and help you make an informed decision. Healing times can vary but generally range from a few weeks to a few months.

In the end, whether you get one is your choice. The piece of jewelry can be changed at any time, but the hole might never close, so be sure that you want one before getting one.

Have a Good Day!
