Alkaloids usage does not end only with medications, they are also important in making other items such as coffees, tea, creams, and many other daily life items. When it comes to the chemistry of alkaloids in pharmacognosy, are also a class of naturally occurring chemical compounds that contain mostly basic nitrogen atoms as heterocycles with other atoms attached. This chemical nature forms the basis for the classification of alkaloids in pharmacognosy. They are produced by a variety of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, and are known for their diverse pharmacological effects. Alkaloids in pharmacognosy are structurally diverse and can be classified into several subclasses based on their chemical structure. Some common alkaloids examples include caffeine used in tea and energy drink production, morphine used as a pain killer and opioid therapy in people with migraine and other painful conditions, and nicotine a stimulant found in cigars and insecticides.

There are also some alkaloids in pharmacognosy that are used in traditional medicine systems like Islamic medicine, and China medicine. For example, the alkaloid berberine which is one of the rare colored alkaloids and is yellow in color, it is also found in several plants, and it is used in traditional Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Despite alkaloids' usage potential in medicine, alkaloids can also be harmful if consumed in large quantities or if they interact with other medications. It is important to use caution when consuming alkaloids and to follow the advice of a healthcare professional. Alkaloids are diverse and are basically from the Tracheophytes. True Alkaloids are basically found in angiosperms, while pseudo alkaloids are found in gymnosperms like gliotoxin. Alkaloids in plants are basically the most common form of alkaloid while there is research going about alkaloids in pharmacognosy to see if alkaloids could be extracted from other forms of life.

Isoquinoline alkaloids: These alkaloid structures are based on the isoquinoline ring system and are found in a variety of plants. Examples include papaverine, which is found in opium poppies, and sanguinarine, which is found in the bloodroot plants.

Indole alkaloids: These alkaloid structures are based on the indole ring system and are a good illustration of alkaloids in plants. Examples include serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter in the human body, and tryptamine, which is found in several psychoactive plants.

Quinoline alkaloids: These alkaloids have a structure that is based on the quinoline ring system and are found in several types of plants. Pyrrolidine alkaloids: These alkaloid structures show activity based on the pyrrolidine ring system and are in plants. Examples include hyoscyamine, which is found in plants like henbane and mandrake, and nicotine, which is found in tobacco.

Tropane alkaloids: These alkaloids have a structure that is based on the tropane ring system and are found in a variety of plants. Alkaloids examples include atropine, which is found in plants like belladonna and datura, and scopolamine, which is found in plants like henbane and jimsonweed.

Pyridine alkaloids: These alkaloids have the pyridine ring system encoded in their structure and are usually derived from an amino acid( ornithine ). Alkaloids example are lobeline found in lobelia leaves and is being used as a smoking deterrent.

Imidazole alkaloids: Alkaloids in pharmacognosy would not have been a subject of study, thanks to pilocarpine, the eye drop used in patient care in the ophthalmology clinic. This eye drop is used to treat glaucoma.

How to Extract Alkaloids in Pharmacognosy.

Cocaine is also used as a topical anesthetic in pains that are not controllable by normal over-the-counter drugs(OTC), NSAIDs(Ibuprofen), or opioid therapy(Morphine). The extraction of cocaine as an alkaloid in pharmacognosy or any other alkaloids can be carried out in a standard controlled pharmaceutical laboratory, or industry, Most Alkaloids are classified as poisons and are regulated by local or state laws. Examples of these alkaloids are nicotine and tubocurarine. This is due to their potential toxicity and poisoning effects. Alkaloids can be extracted in two ways; the base and acid extraction methods.

Method A: Powdered crunched leaf is moistened with water and mixed with lime water. Which combines with acids, tannins, and other phenolic substances in the alkaloid, this process extracts the alkaloids as salts. It is important to extract the alkaloids as aqueous solutions. Extraction of the alkaloid in aqueous solutions is carried out in organic solvents. The organic liquid is shaken with aqueous acid and allowed to separate. This process is known as the acid extraction method.

Method B: The powdered leaf is extracted with water in dilute acid. Removal of leaf pigments is done by shaking the alkaloid extract with an organic solvent. Alkaloids are then precipitated by the addition of excess base preferably ammonia. They are then extracted with organic solvents.

There are various ways for extracting alkaloids from plants, including steam distillation, and maceration. The technique used will be determined by the alkaloid being extracted, the plant material in which it is contained, and the intended dosage form of the medicine. Steam distillation is another method used to extract alkaloids from plants. It involves heating the plant material to produce steam, which carries the alkaloids with it. The steam is then cooled and condensed, and the alkaloids are collected in the condensate. Once extracted, alkaloids in pharmacognosy are frequently refined and described in order to establish their chemical composition and biological function.

Nicotine is also a stimulant present in tobacco, is extremely addictive, and can have significant health repercussions when ingested in excessive amounts. Nicotine most especially can cause respiratory depression leading to death. These are some major side effects of plant alkaloids in pharmacognosy. A well-elaborated alkaloids example is tobacco leaf, chewed as a stimulant. This can be a dangerous practice if not regulated by a healthcare provider.

Traditional medicine: Because of their supposed health advantages, several alkaloids are employed in traditional medicine systems. Berberine, an alkaloid present in various plants, is utilized in traditional Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

Other applications: Alkaloids are employed in a range of other uses such as pesticides, artificial flavors, and dyes. The alkaloid nicotine, for example, is occasionally employed as a pesticide, whereas the alkaloid quinine is utilized as a flavoring ingredient in tonic water.
