Thoth Tarot

Each week when I do these readings I set up my reading space with black fabric, (for the photo, mostly but it also allows for and smooth, calm space to focus on the cards) make sure I have undisturbed quiet time; dogs are out, husband is at work/play/store/whatever, phone is off, etc… I begin with a quick grounding meditation and settle into a centered peace to ask for guidance in choosing the cards which will be most appropriate for the week ahead. I shuffle the cards with my intent in mind and spread them in a dealer’s “ribbon spread”. Then with eyes closed, I ask for the Center card, the West card and finally, the East card, reaching out to the spread, touching the cards and choosing the one that feels most fully under my finger tip, then sliding them into their positions. Before opening my eyes I return to a calm, centered state and do my best to sense whether the three cards I’ve chosen are the most fitting for the highest and best for all involved. Only then do I open my eyes, turn them face up and photograph them for the reading. There are times when I see the three cards before me and groan or breathe a sigh of relief but I always use the cards I’ve selected ”blindly”.

The Center card this week is the Hierophant.

Having been in the West position last week but clearly the main influence for the week, here he is again taking center stage. As I said before, The Hierophant is about recognizing a connection to the Divine in ourselves and finding ways to bring that connection into our daily actions and interactions. I said it more elegantly last week but the gist is the same, this card represents our desire and intent to align our daily selves with that which we see as “good”. This week, however, the Hierophant is augmented by The Hermit and Lust, both also Major Arcana cards, which gives the whole trio a deeper and more life influencing lesson.

The West card is the Hermit.

Often the Hermit is seen as a messenger of loneliness, loss and ascetic renunciation but he’s also seen as the “light bringer”. In fact, he has not released his material “things” begrudgingly but willingly and gratefully. He has found the path which leads to an inner light, an inner knowing that any possessions he needs are, at best, secondary to his sense of peace and fulfillment. Under his influence we have the chance to discover a greater sense of self, and in doing so, to realize that the material possessions we’ve compiled pale in comparison to the brilliance of Self acceptance. When we find the light of ourselves we no longer need that fancy car or expensive education or stunning face and body, age or youth to see the beauty that is, and always has been, who we are. This realization is by no means simple or easily found by most of us. I know there are a few throughout history who seem to have been born with it and who we follow and “idolize”, though I really don’t imagine any of them would ever have chosen to be an idol. It’s just that we see their calm, centered benevolence and want to be like them. The hitch comes when we think we need to BE them rather than ourselves. When we find that benevolence inside Self, that’s when we can release the need to be someone else or mask ourselves with possessions, money or intellect.

The East card is Lust.

I always feel like I need to explain the name on this card. In the RWS (Ryder Waite Smith) system of the Tarot this card is called Strength. It’s a card of pure manifestation, the opportunity to create out of nothing. In the word strength we find the animal power and strength of the beast or anima to make things happen. As I see it, the word Lust engenders the depth of passion needed to find the strength to make things happen. It’s a subtle difference but, I think, an important one. Strength can be gained by repetition, determination and action, whereas Lust goes deeper. It is the lust for life, the passion to create that drives the ambition and determination to gain strength. Surpassing known strictures and boundaries requires not only the strength of will to press on, but the passion to find a way beyond what is already known.

In Conclusion;

What a powerful week. I find it not surprising that as the powers of the world shift we uncover parts of ourselves that have been muffled by all that’s happened so far this year. Feelings of strength, a re-connection to bits of ourselves that have been left unattended as we grapple with worldly challenges and a calm, centered re-acquaintance with the person, the light, we’ve been hiding inside are all possible and even prevalent this week. Embrace the parts in you that have been waiting for acknowledgement and revel in the calm strength to be found there.

Have a boundless week.

Light, Tory

TIP for the week: Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid. Albert Einstein.
