1 What to Know About Blood Clots

According to Marchese, "Blood clots can be a silent killer, manifest in a variety of ways, and cause severe complications. Smoking, high blood pressure, and some medications, like estrogen, can contribute to a higher risk of blood clots. Knowing the symptoms of blood clots can save your life before it becomes a pulmonary embolism or stroke."

2 You Can Have a Blood Clot and Not Know it

Marchese clarifies, "Most frequently, blood clots form in the legs, preventing oxygen from reaching nearby tissue. Blood clots that are superficial or present in areas without damaged tissue, however, sometimes go undetected. Because they can still cause serious lung or brain issues if left untreated, blood clots that don't elicit symptoms are particularly deadly."

3 Shortness of Breath or Dizziness

According to Marchese, you can be more prone to disregard fatigue, perspiration, shortness of breath, or vertigo after engaging in moderate to vigorous activity. "However, if these symptoms continue and happen while at rest or performing light activity, they should not be ignored. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that prevents oxygen from reaching the circulation and occurs in the lungs. If a pulmonary embolism is not treated right away, it can be fatal."

4 Swelling, Pain, Color Change or Warm Skin in the Extremities

Marchese claims that "You can mistake a swelled or discolored area of skin for a recent injury if you are unsure of the symptoms of a blood clot, or you might dismiss a modest change in the color or temperature of your leg. These, however, are blatant indications of deep vein thrombosis, or a blood clot that has developed deep beneath the skin and is preventing blood flow to healthy tissue. Seek medical help as soon as you can if you have one-sided intense pain, redness, swelling, or heated skin in a specific location. A pulmonary embolism or more serious problems, such as gangrene, may result from a deep vein thrombosis."

5 General Weakness, Nausea, Problems with Vision or Speech

Marchese claims: "In the brain's blood arteries that have been made smaller by fatty deposits, a blood clot may get stuck. They could also be brought on by brain injuries or physical blows that result in concussions. You can feel lightheaded, disoriented, or experience visual or speech issues as a result of blood clots that keep oxygenated blood from reaching certain parts of the brain. From general weakness to convulsions, blood clots in the brain can result in a variety of neurological problems. Seek medical attention as quickly as you can if you notice anything unusual."
