Colorado's Great War Against Summer
I had always regarded summer as one of those institutions which mankind had accepted without sufficient examination. Winter, for example, has the decency to announce its intentions by making a man put on a coat, whereas summer comes smiling into town and begins removing his property by degrees. It took me several years to understand this, and I might never have understood it at all if Colorado had not produced a week of weather so savage that respectable citizens began conducting themselves like escaped lunatics. By Tuesday morning I had seen enough to conclude that civilization is largely a matter of temperature, and that if a thermometer could be made to rise high enough, every man would eventually become a savage, every woman a philosopher, and every politician a liar.

A Brief Tour of Everyday Moments When Your Brain Abandons You in Public
Human beings have accomplished extraordinary things; we built skyscrapers, landed on the moon, split the atom, and created tiny computers capable of accessing nearly the entire accumulated knowledge of civilization from our pockets. Yet, a waiter can say, “Enjoy your meal,” and a fully functioning adult will confidently respond, “You too!” And just like that, 200,000 years of human evolution goes straight down the toilet.

Putin's Hellish Wifi Problem. Top Story - August 2026.
Putin died. He didn't even see the Pearly Gates, was sent straight down to hell. He thought he ended up in the hottest part of hell. It was a million times worse than an infrared sauna he used to warm up his old bones in his bunker. And there was no water. Oh, and the torture he was subjected to, to compound the heat!

I Was Defeated by a Hotel Door in Death Valley
This is a true story, and I would like to say I went to Death Valley for the silence, the geology, or some noble reason involving self-discovery. I would love to tell you I had reached a point in my life where I felt called to stand among spectacular rock formations and contemplate the meaning of existence. Unfortunately, the truth is considerably less impressive. I saw a photograph online of orange rock formations and thought, That looks like a place where good things happen to me. This is how many bad decisions begin: with a photograph and an unreasonable amount of confidence. I booked three days, packed a camera, hiking boots, and the sort of optimism you only have before a place has had the opportunity to introduce itself properly.

I Did Not Win That Competetion
Growing up in the Mojave Desert, I thought I knew heat. Barstow in August is an incinerator where the air smells like melted asphalt and roasted lizard skin. Barstow is the home of the world's largest thermometer for a reason... the area is hot enough to melt your soul. So, when I met Jerimiah ( a man who is, for the record, a walking, breathing smoke show ) I assumed my thermal credentials were fully established.

Self-Checkout Is Just Unpaid Employment
There was a time when grocery shopping was beautifully uncomplicated. You grabbed your groceries, rolled your cart to the front of the store, exchanged a few pleasant words with the cashier, and someone, an actual employee, bagged everything while you wondered whether you'd remembered to buy ketchup. Life was good.
