The Day We Froze in a Heatwave
I still remember that day as if it happened yesterday. It was August 1982, one of those summers people still talk about decades later. The kind where every conversation started with, "It's hot, isn't it?" as if anyone needed reminding while slowly melting into the pavement.

Summer Exchange
Summers were suffocating on the farm. There was no AC in the house so relief was found outside in the cool grass under the ancient oak trees. Sometimes, when Sadie was feeling adventurous, she would douse herself in a light covering of cold dirt. The dogs did it, so it had to be worth something.

Clowns at the Center of the Earth. Honorable Mention in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - August 2026.
The planet becomes largely uninhabitable, not by some dramatic event, but by a slow and steady stream of billionaire exploitation. Temperatures have soared to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius). It’s a bit like Mad Max Thunderdome , but without the iconic sexy leather outfits.

Even the Rain Didn't Help. Runner-Up in Too Hot for This Challenge.
It was a hot and sunny day in Center City Philadelphia, and the sun hung high in the sky, despite the lateness of the hour. Even in the shade, the temperature was 111° while in the sun, it felt more like it was 120° maybe even far beyond that and James had no inkling of how the heat factor scale worked. All he knew was that he liked the much cooler air (in the 60's - 80's was more his style), it felt like he was in a confectionery oven where even the slight breeze made it feel worse and only stirring the already hot air around his sweating body.

The Last Cool Person at the Summer Festival
By eleven o'clock in the morning, the annual Summer Street Festival had already become a test of faith and character. The sun hung over the town square with the focused hostility of someone using a magnifying glass on an ant. Heat shimmered above the pavement in visible waves. The metal folding chairs were hot enough to fry an egg. Somewhere near the funnel cake stand, a toddler was crying because his snow cone had evaporated before he could eat it.

Self-Checkout Is Just Unpaid Employment
There was a time when grocery shopping was beautifully uncomplicated. You grabbed your groceries, rolled your cart to the front of the store, exchanged a few pleasant words with the cashier, and someone, an actual employee, bagged everything while you wondered whether you'd remembered to buy ketchup. Life was good.

Hot Soup for Brains. Winner in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - August 2026.
I’d been dressing myself for how long now? Over three decades? And I still couldn’t get it right? The sun was most likely roasting everything in this corner of the planet, if you asked a scientist, but if you asked me, it was all funneling to my black shirt. My instinct was to wipe the sweat away from my forehead, but MORON… both your hands are occupied carrying this heavy box! I tried to pretend that I wasn’t sweating, and that the sweat that I wasn’t sweating wasn’t bothering me, and I continued down the sidewalk, sun sautéing my skin through my blackest of black shirts.

Too Hot Too Function . Honorable Mention in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - August 2026.
“ DANGER! CROCODILES SWIM HERE!” It was humid. It was sweltering hot. For ten continuous days the weather was too unbearable to breathe. Fans blew thirty-five-degree warm air right back in our faces. The car AC refused to work, and everyone drove with their windows wound down, so that flies, moths and mosquitoes could harass us while we were trapped inside, dying within the walls of our tin can vehicles.

Too Hot For This. Top Story - August 2026.
In fourth grade, my mom took me shopping at Kids ‘R US for back-to-school clothes. There was a denim mini skirt set with a matching, long-sleeved jean jacket. Maybe it wasn’t mini, and it only felt mini because I had gotten my period the summer before, and my hips had filled out to a young woman’s size and not kids' size, but there wasn’t a store for that that also fit my very small younger sister, so here we were. This skirt had black bows and white pearls, and I distinctly remember thinking I was going to beg her to buy it for me to impress MATT.
