So, they sat around a table with condensation on it, smoking and joking. The laughter ricocheted off the walls and sounded like bursts from trumpets. Their shirts remained damp; they toweled off from the blazing heat. It didn’t matter. The sweat congregated at their temples, their foreheads, their armpits. The smell of liquor permeated the air and almost made it hotter.

High Noon At The Intersection of Oh My God
We all know that it was hot, like hotter than we wanted on Monday. It'd been hot all weekend, and the heat was brutally unrelenting for far too long. But it gets that way, sometimes. Sometimes, it gets so hot that the air is harder to breathe, and it gets unbearable. So, what is one to do?

The Sweltering Bus Ride
"Do you mind?" the snoody lady in front of me asks. Don't know why she's so huffy. I'm not even touching her anymore. But I move back, pulling my face away from hers, and sit in my own seat. The bus sucks in summer. There's no air conditioning, and the windows are glued shut. The driver says he doesn't want the pollen coming in and "dusting up" the pleather seats.

I Don’t Trust Anyone Who Answers the Phone Anymore...
There was a time, long ago, in a gentler and more naïve civilization, when the sound of a ringing phone meant something simple. It meant someone wanted to talk to you. That time is dead… Murdered. Buried beneath an avalanche of robocalls, extended warranties, suspicious silences, heavy breathing, and one deeply committed individual who keeps asking if you’ve considered switching to solar power, even though you live in a forest yurt, and haven’t seen the sun since 2009.

I live in a 1950s terrace house on the outskirts of Nottingham. The walls are so thick that multiple builders have failed to successfully drill through them. They are filled with concrete and rubble, and even diamond-tipped drill bits fail to pierce them.

The Fall of the House of Fahrenheit. Runner-Up in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - August 2026.
Author's Note I wrote this story as a lighthearted tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, borrowing his dark, dramatic tone and nineteenth-century storytelling style for a tale that's far less haunted by ghosts than by a relentless summer heat wave. While the voice may feel akin to, the story itself is entirely original and meant as a bit of Gothic fun.

Welcome to Texas
Well, hell. My weather app says it's 92 degrees. The really bad news is that it's 10PM. I fell asleep while watching TV again. It's kind of a tradition: One of us picks something to watch. It starts, I sit back, and Pam wakes me up when it's over.

Humanity’s Only Hope. Honorable Mention in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - July 2026.
They say murder rates go up in a heat wave. I understood why when the power went out in my building on one of the hottest days on record. The grinding of my air conditioner’s fan coming to a halt was echoed in the grinding of my teeth.

When it all Burns
Another warning on the heat index, but I want to spend time hanging out by the pool. The water is warm and any steamier would be a giant hot tub. Reapply of sunscreen and still somehow get a sun/heat rash. It burns and itches right next to bug bites and some regular sunburn. I shower off the chlorine and it all burns under the water, skin hurting and irritated while constantly pulling out creams and tying not to scratch.
