I Wore Black to a Gatsby Lawn Party. Top Story - August 2026.
The Great Gatsby lawn party took place on my birthday weekend during an August heatwave at a nearby period mansion by the seacoast. This is one of my favorite historical periods, and I had a dress ready to go.

Colorado's Great War Against Summer
I had always regarded summer as one of those institutions which mankind had accepted without sufficient examination. Winter, for example, has the decency to announce its intentions by making a man put on a coat, whereas summer comes smiling into town and begins removing his property by degrees. It took me several years to understand this, and I might never have understood it at all if Colorado had not produced a week of weather so savage that respectable citizens began conducting themselves like escaped lunatics. By Tuesday morning I had seen enough to conclude that civilization is largely a matter of temperature, and that if a thermometer could be made to rise high enough, every man would eventually become a savage, every woman a philosopher, and every politician a liar.

A Brief Tour of Everyday Moments When Your Brain Abandons You in Public
Human beings have accomplished extraordinary things; we built skyscrapers, landed on the moon, split the atom, and created tiny computers capable of accessing nearly the entire accumulated knowledge of civilization from our pockets. Yet, a waiter can say, “Enjoy your meal,” and a fully functioning adult will confidently respond, “You too!” And just like that, 200,000 years of human evolution goes straight down the toilet.

Relief at Last. Honorable Mention in Too Hot for This Challenge. Top Story - August 2026.
I hate being in public. In public I have to be covered up. I sweat, and cuss, and flap away wasps. I see people walking about in shorts or sundresses and I curse them, too. How are they smiling ? Where are the sweat stains and glistening faces - don't they have glands ? By rights I should be surrounded by acres of sunburnt skin and a constant sussuration of disgruntled muttering. If there was any good in the world, it would provide a pleasant, cooling breeze.

Putin's Hellish Wifi Problem. Top Story - August 2026.
Putin died. He didn't even see the Pearly Gates, was sent straight down to hell. He thought he ended up in the hottest part of hell. It was a million times worse than an infrared sauna he used to warm up his old bones in his bunker. And there was no water. Oh, and the torture he was subjected to, to compound the heat!

Give Me the Snow
By 9 am The thermometer on the sign outside the pharmacy on Calle Mayor had already given up rounding to the nearest sensible figure and gone straight for the theatrical 37 degrees and it was still early. It would climb . Everyone knew it would climb, the way you know its going to be one of those days. It's etched in your memory from every other August, and yet this promises to give you an extra couple of degrees more.

I Was Defeated by a Hotel Door in Death Valley
This is a true story, and I would like to say I went to Death Valley for the silence, the geology, or some noble reason involving self-discovery. I would love to tell you I had reached a point in my life where I felt called to stand among spectacular rock formations and contemplate the meaning of existence. Unfortunately, the truth is considerably less impressive. I saw a photograph online of orange rock formations and thought, That looks like a place where good things happen to me. This is how many bad decisions begin: with a photograph and an unreasonable amount of confidence. I booked three days, packed a camera, hiking boots, and the sort of optimism you only have before a place has had the opportunity to introduce itself properly.

Out of the Fire, Into the Ice. Runner-Up in Too Hot for This Challenge.
Nathaniel reeled back as soon as the heat attacked him. He gritted his teeth not only in extreme discomfort, but also in great frustration. It would be one thing if he had been going outside, since it was supposed to get to 100 degrees Fahrenheit today. It was unfortunate, but the expectation helped Nathaniel deal with the dry, hot weather when he went out earlier for popsicles.
