The Last Notification

After his death, his phone kept sending messages… and they were meant for someone still alive.

By shakir hamidPublished 6 months ago • 3 min read

The phone buzzed at 2:11 AM.

Sara woke up instantly.

Not because of the sound — but because of the name on the screen.

“Yusuf ❤️”

Her heart stopped.

That wasn’t possible.

Her hands trembled as she reached for the phone.

Yusuf had died three months ago.

She had stood there at the hospital, holding his hand as the machines went silent. She had seen everything end.

And yet…

Another notification.

1 New Message

Her breath grew shallow.

Slowly, she unlocked the phone.

“You forgot to water the plant again.”

Sara stared at the screen, frozen.

Tears filled her eyes.

That was something Yusuf always said.

Every week.

Same tone. Same teasing complaint.

“No…” she whispered. “This isn’t real…”

Her first instinct was to call the number.

She did.

Switched off.

Of course.

Dead numbers don’t answer.

The Second Message

At 2:14 AM, another message arrived.

“It’s the one near the window. It needs sunlight.”

Sara’s chest tightened.

She slowly turned her head.

The plant.

Dry.

Forgotten.

Exactly as the message said.

Her fingers shook.

Someone was watching her.

Or—

Something was.

Doubt

The next morning, she convinced herself it was a glitch.

Maybe old scheduled messages.

Maybe someone hacking.

Maybe her own mind trying to cope.

But deep down…

She knew.

Yusuf never scheduled messages.

He barely remembered birthdays.

The Pattern

The messages continued.

Not every hour.

Not every day.

But always at strange times.

2:11 AM.

4:03 AM.

11:47 PM.

And they weren’t random.

They were… personal.

“You left the stove on.”

She ran to the kitchen.

It was.

“Don’t ignore Ammi’s call today.”

She checked her phone.

Missed call.

“You didn’t sleep again.”

She hadn’t.

Each message felt like him.

Not just the words.

The care behind them.

The small details no one else noticed.

The Truth She Was Avoiding

One night, Sara finally typed back.

Her hands trembling.

“Yusuf?”

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

Typing…

Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it.

The reply came slowly.

“You’re not supposed to reply.”

Her throat went dry.

“Who is this?”

Long pause.

Then—

“I don’t have much time.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“Yusuf… is that you?”

The typing stopped.

Then started again.

Stopped.

Then finally—

“I remember you.”

Her chest broke.

That was his way.

He never said things directly.

Always halfway.

Always soft.

The Final Message

Minutes passed like hours.

Sara held her phone tightly.

Afraid the connection would disappear.

Afraid it would stay.

“Where are you?” she typed.

This time, the reply took longer.

Much longer.

When it came, it wasn’t what she expected.

“Not where you think.”

Her breathing became uneven.

“Why are you messaging me?”

The answer came instantly.

“Because you’re not moving on.”

The words hit harder than anything else.

“How can I?” she replied. “You left.”

No response.

Just silence.

Then—

“No.”

Her eyes filled again.

“You stayed.”

Her hands froze.

She read it again.

And again.

The realization sank slowly.

Painfully.

She had stopped living.

Stopped laughing.

Stopped going out.

Stopped everything.

As if time had ended with him.

The Goodbye

The phone buzzed one last time.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen. Messages don’t go backward.”

Sara wiped her tears.

“Don’t go.”

Her fingers shook.

“Please.”

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Came back again.

Then—

“If I stay, you won’t let me go.”

Her chest tightened.

“I don’t want to let you go.”

The final message came.

“Then you’ll stay here too.”

Silence.

Her heart dropped.

Then one last vibration.

“Live, Sara.”

After

The messages stopped.

No more notifications.

No more late-night vibrations.

The phone became just a phone again.

But something inside her shifted.

Slowly.

Painfully.

She watered the plant.

She called her mother.

She stepped outside.

For the first time in months.

The Last Twist

Weeks later, Sara changed her phone.

New number.

New start.

But one night, as she scrolled through her gallery—

She found something strange.

A screenshot she never took.

A message.

Dated the night before Yusuf died.

“If anything happens to me… don’t stop living.”

Her hands trembled.

She didn’t remember seeing it before.

But now—

It was the only message that mattered.
