The Gatekeepers You Don't Need

Modern spirituality is tricking you into a powerless state of being

The Power of Three - three purple and gold polka dot plant leaves on a timber deck

I joined a psychic development class back in 2006 for funzies. I was looking for somewhere to develop my intuition more for my Tarot practice and found a local teacher that was popular at the time.

Sign me up! Off I went to psychic class twice a month and I loved it. I drank the kool-aid and I went back for more!

My first hurdle showed up during one of the meditations when we were guided by the teacher, through a lush landscape and to a door.

The door represented a doorway into another realm, as the teacher described, to meet someone from the spirit world.

I was so excited! I'm going to meet someone from the spirit world!

I got nothing.

There was a door. It didn't open. It wouldn't budge.

So I was there, hanging around my imaginary door, in the void, until the time came in the meditation to get back to the "physical world".

I sat there, in the circle, listening to everyone else's stories of whom they met. From archangels to dead loved ones, to spirit animals, they all came through in droves for everyone else but me.

I had nothing.

I felt pretty shitty. Like I was being punished or something.

The teacher made some comments to me about "not being ready" or some other garbage. I believed it.

My take away from that class was that I wasn't worthy of the spirit world contacting me.

Then two weeks later I went back for more. Surely, my door will open this time and there better be someone there to chat with me about the state of things.

Guess what ...

Nothing.

And that was happening class after class after class after class. It was so bad, I started making up things just so I didn't have to feel so left out and unworthy.

When the term ended and we got a new teacher, things have changed because there were no more meditations with doors in them.

It will take me over a decade to decipher what all that was about and realise that this modern, custom made spirituality that is so popular is creating hordes of people, just as cut off from their power as any of the other religions of the world.

Where you need a doorway, a gate, a pass, an escort to access higher power as well as your own power.

When you access your own power, without having to go through a divine agent, you are plugging directly into the universe and with that all its power, its knowledge, its resources.

When we are taught that we need a doorway or a gatekeeper to access that power, we start believing a few things:

  • that we are not worthy to access that power on our own
  • that we are not capable of wielding that power on our own
  • that we are not to be trusted with that power on our own

So while you think you're doing the best for yourself to develop as a spiritual being, if this is the kind of teaching you received, you've been subjected to messaging that tells you

  • that you need to achieve a level of spiritual worthiness set by others to be allowed access to power
  • that you need your hands held like a child through your journey because you're incompetent
  • that you are likely to misuse the power you're "given" unless you are supervised

This isn't fertile ground for good, wholesome, robust development of one's power. This is a breeding ground for insecurities and developing a heavy reliance on constant validation and feedback.

You don't need a doorway to access your power.

You don't need to be supervised by spiritual supernannies to make sure you don't stray from your prescribed path. You don't need an overseer that determines how far on your path you can go, who with and how fast.

Barriers to power will only stand when you believe that you're unworthy, incompetent and unprincipled.

Do you believe these things about yourself? Are they really true?

Where are you restraining yourself and blocking your true power?

The moment you realise that you are spiritually autonomous is the moment you are calling all your power back to you.

Because with you is where your power belongs.
