Would You Like This to be a Date?
“Oi, watch the sword!” I yelled at the guards chasing me. A blade swished inches from my backside as I sprinted down the streets of Zaren. The bag of stolen food weighed me down, but I was still faster. I banked right, the metallic clunking of fallen guards echoing behind me.

What Lies Behind His Eyes
Globs of crimson swam to and fro across the woman’s towering canvas, but it did not overcome her, for the raw, naked beauty which possessed her, made her seem equal to that of her work. Perhaps, her nightly lovers wondered, after nights of euphoria they had never felt before, nor would ever feel again, perhaps, she was her own work of art, and every piece she created was simply another offering of herself to the canvas. The woman had no care for an apron; muddled smears of paint could make their way from her cracked fingers to her loose, entirely too long hair, but she would have to notice said stains to begin to care. Today, on her balcony shrouded in an overgrown jungle of plants, many wilted in desperate thirst, the woman worked with a palette of deepest crimsons, which she had set aside on a frail stool teetering against the heavy breeze. In one hand, wet with pigment against the side of her palm, she held a thick handled paintbrush, sloppy with paint. Her other hand, laden with a tall stemmed glass of merlot, lifted the red to her already stained lips. By the time she would come to finish her glass of Sauvignon Blonde, the merlot being the choice of her previous nights partner, (who had chosen the bottle sporting a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, with stars in his eyes as he beheld the woman’s face, for her beauty, though much less refined and polished than Monroe’s, reminded him of her all the same), the woman would find herself drinking from the lip of the bottle in lieu of refilling her glass.

Wine and Sympathy
Alex had texted again last night. Maeve upended the bottle of wine into the pan and stepped back quickly as the gas burner flared up from the splashes. Right, right, don’t pour alcohol over open flames unless professional chef or itching to give the kitchen a makeover. More carefully she measured and added sugar in the grey light of early morning.

CLASSIC MOVE
Just swipe left they said, or up and down or sideways, whatever, it never worked. Beth had been divorced for five years now. She had been married for 8 years and listened to everyone tell her that after seven years, it’s all good. Well, it wasn’t, and it didn’t end well. Beth had finally decided it was time to step out again, for real this time. She missed having that daily touch, and companionship she looked forward to sharing her home with. Her friends had tried over and over to set her up with their friends, relatives and of course, those older people at weddings who felt they had the perfect setup for her. She denied all of them and after many days and nights at home alone with her nightly glass of Merlot, she knew no matter how fancy the glass, it could not take the place of a man.

Dating To Arrive Early
It must have been a hundred years since Xander wore a suit and tie. Poised in front of a full-length mirror, he brushed his fingers through his thick blonde hair. "Now there's a renaissance man! Blood-stained and bruised as I led the Mongol horde across the steppes of central Asia to the current sharp-dressed man I see here, there isn't a shoe I can't fill,” he proclaimed.

Sunsets Over the Vineyard
It didn't seem like much, the hole in the wall nestled between tire and tattoo shops in a beaten up strip mall with a beaten up parking lot. The really nice restaurants in the really nice part of town were only a few minutes more up the road, but Jack insisted that he had to meet Her there. They had met at a party for some mutual friend that James took Jack to about a week ago. It didn't really matter whose party it was after Jack met Her. They didn't talk long, but somehow James had set the two of them up on a date. Jack wasn't going in totally blind, so he had that going for him. He didn't know what they were going to talk about, but James assured him that they had a lot in common, and that if Jack was so certain about the restaurant then he could at least count on the wine to give him a hand.

The Color of Wine
The memory of him was like a punch in the arm. She felt it, purple and bruised, the color of good merlot, although it didn’t leave a mark. It was that kind of radiating achiness that wasn’t exactly pleasurable, but she knew it was good for her. She checked messages. Nothing, although he had promised to call. She wondered if he’d follow through. And, then she was sure that he wouldn’t. Of course not. She picked up her phone and checked it again. She was right.

You Had Me At Merlot
My friend Gwen decided it would be fun to have a girls’ night out on the town at a local wine bar since we’ve been locked inside our houses for the last year. Wine bars aren’t typically my scene because I’m more of a hard seltzer on a boat kind of girl. My palate isn’t what one would call, refined.
