dating
All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
The Last Date
He hates it here. He hates how the wall is plastered in motivational posters, attempting to lighten the dreadful, thick air within the room. He hates the chairs, how the leather arm rests have claw marks from years of anxious patients. This is his first day here, and he hates it already.

Self-Destructive Tendencies
Isabel was one of those people who always seemed to do the wrong thing despite knowing full-well what was best for her. She had decided long ago, that alcohol was not her drug of choice. It left her feeling nauseous, sick, and regretful of the temperament she tended to display. Despite this, she found it hard to resist, as it was the preferred method of socialization, and often found herself backtracking on her decision to refrain from its consumption. It seemed the only way to function in society and the age-old adage “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” played over in her mind once again. She was getting better, she told herself. Drinking less and less. Maybe one day she would be able to go cold turkey, but today she was in the mood to make bad decisions.

A Glass of Magic
The bartender picked up his dish towel to begin drying off wine glasses. As he put them away, he surveyed the bar. It had been a slow night. The bar was mostly empty except for a few regulars and a couple of college kids. As he finished serving his patrons another round, a petite brunette walked in. She ran her hands along her sides smoothing down her dress before taking a seat at the end of the bar.

Whine and Dine
Kaitlyn Simmons did not know how to date. She had read all the romantic books in her library, she had seen all the cheesy romantic comedies, she even tried dating apps at unfortunate points in her life, but it was all to no avail. When it came time to meet the man of her dreams, a level of awkwardness raised in her like the ocean tides when the moon is at its perigee. And that tide came complete with all the wonderful horrors of H.P. Lovecraft's most famous sea-based deities.

A Table for Two
She taps her foot on the floor at an anxious pace, seated alone at a table set for two. Despite the fact that every aspect of this restaurant's environment has been fine-tuned to ensure a totally relaxed experience--from the light seventies soul playing unobtrusively in the background, to the dim warm light emitting from crystalline chandeliers hanging high above on mirrored ceilings, to the leisurely pace at which the handful of present servers make their way about the dining area, carrying bottles of Pinot Grigio and Zinfandel with which to refill their patrons' glasses--the performative quality of it all somehow contributes even more to the nervous knot which has been forming in her stomach since she first stepped inside the establishment. Three years at least have passed since she has been active in the dating scene, and it is looking like her first attempt to reenter is going to result in another no-show.

A surprise first date
Have you ever seen the movie “the 40-year-old virgin?” Well, I must tell you that if you had and liked that movie, then odds are you may enjoy my story. It is not precisely a slapstick comedy, but I am a woman in her 40’s who has never been on a date. Many people wonder why this is the case, but the truth is I was sexually assaulted and raped at an early age. Since then, the idea of dating was not exactly the first thing that came to mind. However, if the right man came along, I would not shy away from an opportunity.

Two hearts intertwined over a bottle of wine
"How does Sunday evening sound?" said Freya looking deep into Ella's honey brown eyes and without hesitating Ella responded "yes! what did you have in mind?" Freya hadn't gone out on a date in about 8 months, so she had no idea how to make this go smoothly. Still, Freya replied "Maybe a nice dinner and a movie afterward, followed by a stroll through the park. If that sounds okay with you"

My Medicine, Merlot
My Medicine, Merlot. She curved with such a small gradient that he barely noticed a change in shape as he explored her: a surface that reflected back the dim hue of candlelight that danced in front of him, containing a pool of ruby. She was adequately filled with Merlot, the only medicine that brought back his lost lover, you. An empty chair sat opposite him, and he pictured a silhouette in it, smiling at his fantasy. Countless couples surrounded him, flaunting the love they thought they had. They believed love was timeless. How naive, he thought.

Our first official date
Alexandra and her friends arrived at the Hilltop just before the speed dating event was about to begin. Her friends had been urging her to try online dating, but she preferred to meet someone face to face. It seemed a better way to tell if there was any chemistry between two people, and it seemed impossible to even know if you would be talking to the right person online. People could post anything. A different picture or details that were not true. She just wanted to be able to spend some time in person talking to one another to see how compatible you are. Although she did not feel that speed dating was much better. How much could you really learn in such a short time? And as far as night clubs she felt that they were even worse. They were loud and people were usually intoxicated, and it was all about hooking up with someone before closing time.
