Me Date
I slipped on my shiny black high heels and walked over to the mirror that I hung on the inside of the front closet. I smoothed down my shorter-than-knee-length black sheath dress with my palms. I looked presentable. I had on eyeliner, lip gloss, and a bit of rouge. I was excited for this date...until I wasn't.

Cherry Wine
Maintaining eye contact with the well-dressed man across from her, she hoisted the glass up from the table, and, with an absentminded elegance, her wrist turned to position its rim at her mouth. Tilting her head back along with the glass, the deep red liquid first made its sensation known to her lips. She allowed herself then to close her eyes and welcome the taste of the wine. The dry nature of this particular Merlot was not unlike others she had tasted, so she was surprised when the sudden flavor of rich cherry rushed onto her palate. A flashback—suddenly, the air around her turned warm and she could see through her mind’s eye. Above her, a canopy of teardrop shaped leaves sprinkled with fresh, ripened cherries that shone like rubies as the sun deemed them to do. As she began to reach up and snag one of these treasures, her imagination was interrupted by her date’s inquisitive tone,

Exis & Satchel, soulmates
This story could not have ever been written without the interesting and dynamic characters of Ashton, whom I adore and I love very much! Satchel, Exis and Sloan are all the property (including backstory, features, personality, etc) of Ashton. If you liked this, you should check out more of his works, art and as such—the only thing I take credit for is the writing below. Thank you, and hope you enjoy!

A glass of merlot with a king
My beloved father rejected all the men that wanted to put a ring on my finger. He said, “they did not deserve my time so they should not become a part of our family”. As a result, before going on a date with me, the man would have to go through an interview process. The interview will let my father and I decide whether the man is worthy to be a part of our family. In my family, we mainly judge men based on their daily habits. This included the amount of showers they took, their meditation technique, their skin care routine, their weekly or monthly self-evaluation, the amount of books they read in a year, their house cleaning schedule and the way they treated others. We do not, for a second, believe that any man is not worthy as a human being, however, he must be worthy of my time, money, kindness, love, body and spirit. Unfortunately, most people are not. My only thought was that the date was not going to end up in marriage. I went on a date with Spiky Jerry, Boring Pablo, Weird Ali and Annoying Marco. Do not get me wrong, all these dates were not the worst, however, they did stupidly and naively try to catch my heart with the ‘I love black women’ narrative. They all kissed my hand and joyfully declared their love to me before I realized and was forced to tell them that we were not, in fact made for each other.

The Subtle Art of Blending
Pistol, taser, dagger... Tylane silently rolled down the list as she walked, lightly touching each weapon where it was concealed on her person. She didn’t expect to need them, but without their familiar, reassuring weight, she knew she’d never be able to go through with this. Without them, she couldn’t even walk through that door.

Don’t Eat Peter’s Tomatoes
He walked in looking like George Clooney and smelling like George Costanza. He was a smorgas-George. She closed her eyes and gripped the stem of her wine glass. Then again, she was a total Betty. Bettie Page, Betty White and Betty Rubble but maybe Georgie-boy liked older women. She was certainly about to find out.

Bags and Shoes
Ready and willing, an oversized, dark bag hovers on the open edge of a helicopter’s side entrance. Two men wrestle, then continue to punch each other in the face. A gun slips from the pilot’s hand. Bloody knuckles and swollen jaw, the passenger takes his final shots – POW, POW, POW! He scrams to control the helicopter as it spirals towards the LA highway, taking down with it a seedy man and his troubled partner-gone-wrong.

Just another day
Just another day. So, it’s just you and me, I sigh, another day, another endless night, I glance at my lap top, he doesn’t agree, he flashes me wonderful photographs of the beautiful Libourne region in south west of France. I know his game! It’s in anticipation that something will catch my eye and make me reach out and click on one of these wonderful chateaux, or maybe a gastronomic restaurant that could offer me real French cuisine and wine?

My Dream Date
My Dream Date We glide in silence. My father had always taught the significance of self-reflection. Every day for ten minutes of silence, I would reflect and meditate on the good in my life and how I learned from each moment. I remember him saying. Reflect on the good times. Reflect on the good that also comes out of the bad. Know the worth of life experience. Know the worth of reflections in silence.
