That Time I Went on a Date with (Maybe) the Future President
No one eats before a first date, right? It all started five years ago. I was about to go on my first date in a long time and my stomach was all butterflies and whiskey. She was tall, red haired and fair skinned and, as my buddy Jovi loved to tell me, so far out of my league that we weren't even playing the same sport. But, she had agreed to go on a date with me so I must have been doing something right.

Mr. Perfect
"Marcy lets go, we're going to be late!" my coworker yelled." We had 10 minutes left on lunch and my food still wasn't done. "Ok Keisha I'm coming just give me a second." I honestly wasn't in any rush to leave; especially when the new head chef is so fine. When I say fine its truly an understatement. This man stands 6'5, dark almond shape eyes, deep dark-skin, a Colgate worthy smile, and deep waves even a pro surfer couldn't tame. "Order up... order for Marcy" rings over the P.A system. I'm jolted out of my trance and hurry to collect my order. "Thank You" I replied to the cashier and proceeded towards the exit. "Dang girl you always get the food that takes forever. You need to call your order in from now on, wasting my break!" Keisha jokingly remarked. "Excuse me, Miss Marcy," said a deep soothing voice. "I couldn't let you leave again without introducing myself." I was captivated by the sound of this voice that my body turned as if on auto pilot. It was him. "Hello I'm Leo." he stated as he extended his hand-out. "Hello Leo, I'm Marcy nice to actually meet the man behind the food!" I replied holding my school girl composure. "I couldn't help but-- but to waste more of our time!" Keisha rudely interjected. "We have to get back to work!" she snapped. "My apologies; um Marcy may I have your number I would really like to take you out... after hours?!" Leo stated with a smidge of sarcasm as he cut his eyes at Keisha. I laughed and handed him my business card. "It was truly a pleasure meeting you Leo" I stated while I reluctantly departed. As I walked back to my office, I couldn't wait for the day to be over.

Into my own
For the past fifteen years, my parents had taken the pleasure of packing up their car with our tent, an ice chest, three fishing rods, and basic hygiene essentials. All items were necessary to survive our family's weekend camping trip in the woods. At age thirteen, my parents dared me that I could not last one night in our backyard alone. Much to their surprise, I did! My only invocation was that we would have to camp out every year. What originally began as a challenge has now turned into a family tradition of a week-long trek through some of the world's renowned national parks. More recently though, my mom had broken her leg in two places trying to prevent Beacon, our family's golden retriever, from running into the street after a squirrel, and my dad called to tell me that they are not able to make the trip this year.

To Bloom Vivacious on the Vine
As Daisy finds herself amidst an inner challenge with her standard personal taste (maybe a bit boring) and possible dabbling in eccentric flair (maybe she can't pull it off, or will be coming on too strong), she stands amused and nervous viewing what the boutique's owner has gathered for her. This particular boutique's owner is not a stranger. Her name is Janice. Janice being a lifelong bestie who eagerly went about finding an outfit to either, "Not bore to death" or to, "Wow" on a first date. These were the parameters given to her.

Memories of Rain
I stared into the mirror with intense concentration. I knew I shouldn’t show too much emotion, not yet. I shook my hands out nervously and squinted harder. Three deep breaths. Foundation. Blush. A little mascara. And lipstick. Deep maroon lipstick. Unlike everyone else in my life, you love that color. My mom hates it. My dad hates it. My brother hates it. I think my cat even hates it. She hisses at me every time I wear it. But you love it. I think you love it because you know I love it.

Books, wine and tea, oh my!
Everyone has their idea of a dream date. A day at the beach is one. Another is an escape room. Even a spontaneous trip to Paris or Rome. There are a billion different dream dates. Sadly, there are also a billion different nightmare dates. In my personal opinion, skydiving is a big no-no. Also, going to a movie on the first date screams awkward middle school hangout. I want to get to know you and not stare at a movie, wondering what you are thinking about. However, the best Ideal dates, good or bad. Are the ones you don’t expect, and here’s mine.

The Present Tense
The waiter approached the table with menus in hand, “Benvenuto a Mastiano’s.” A thin Spanish accent coated his words. He opened the menu and handed one to Barbara and the other to Frank. “Our wine selection begins on page one. Can I entice you into a bottle for the evening?”

Aging Better Than Fine Wine
50 Years Ago…. As Maggie walked to school, she pondered the pros and cons of pleading to stay home with her imaginary illness. Friday was always difficult; it was the afternoon of the dreaded multiplication tables quiz. Mrs. Lockhart would quickly call out, “5 times 9, 8 times 4, 7 times 12” and you would have to, just as quickly, write the answer or remember to skip a line so the rest of the test was not all wrong. Maggie was pretty good, but Arthur sat next to her and he would be a basket case all day. By the 5th or 6th problem he would start to sniffle, silent tears would turn into louder sobs, and he would shuffle his feet under his desk. Mrs. Lockhart steadily ignored him and it drove Maggie crazy that she would be that mean!
