All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
Perfect Data Blend
Our first date…I’m nervous and anxious as I typically – or anyone else, I would imagine – would be for a blind date. O.k. – it’s not technically a blind date. I’ve seen him before and he has seen me – on our computer monitor screens, but only a couple of brief times as a matter of physical introduction after we’d determined we enjoyed our conversations. We had engaged in back and forth emails and text messages, then began talking on the phone, and both arrived at the conclusion that there was something with us – something that warranted further investigation and pursuit toward a possible relationship. We’d both shared pictures, and to my content, I found his likeness on screen to be consistent with his photos. Tall, large frame but muscular build. His face appeared kind and gentle – he has a warm smile, which he did not fully display often in his pictures or during our brief onscreen meetings, but there was an upturn to his mouth that I found welcoming and pleasing.

Is this a trick question?
I was walking down the hall to my apartment and there she was. Staring at a newly delivered case of Bright Cellar wine. “Would you like a glass of merlot?” she asked as she showed me her bandaged hand. I need some help getting this case into my apartment. All I could think to say was “is this a trick question?” It was a stupid thing to say. I had been trying to get up the nerve to meet her since I moved into my new apartment. We would exchange hellos while passing in the hall, but the time never seemed right. Ok. I’m lying. She’s beautiful and I’m a chicken. But here she was. With a case of wine. Asking for help and that’s all I could come up with. I felt like an idiot. I figured I had blown my chances forever, but she got the joke. As we both had a laugh, the ice was broken. She had a great smile and a good sense of humor. We were off to a good start. The bandage was new, so I asked her what happened. She shrugged and said only “I cut it at work.” Next thing I knew I was carrying a case of wine into her apartment. “You must really like wine if you buy it by the case” “I do. Plus, I need to try out new vintages for my job.”

Night of Intrigue
Theo sat in the half-lidded light, hiding in the shadow of the vintage screen of the bar. A finger poised over the rim of a glass, tapping to the rhythm of some song drumming dimly in the background. Her eyes were fixated on a man across the room; her grandmother used to say that a woman's gaze never faltered, not when she truly wanted something. But her grandmother never prepared her for what captivated her tonight. A charming smile perhaps, but not eyes that warmed the room, a color like fine aged cognac, smooth and sultry, stirring like the liquor in a refined glass—the alluring gaze of an assured man, no doubt with a voice as husky as his presence.

The Cure of Taste
He looked at his watch. The night was young he supposed. It was just one of those things. It was hard for him to imagine what it would be like. He had dated anyone in a long time. Yet a man in his 30s was in his prime. A looker. At least that was what was in his head.

Six Years Until a Date with a Glass of Merlot
Six years ago, I divorced what I thought was my best friend, what I thought was my true love, he was none of those. Together we did create a beautiful daughter who is still my pride and joy of my life. After the divorce was final, I tried dating. The first one was a friend I had known for 20 years, I always thought he was kind and always took care of others. He was also recently divorced, and I thought we have always gotten a long why not. Well, the first date started off with him showing me how to use a epi pen in case he needed it, it quickly went downhill from there. That was over.

Elevated Dating
The Roundtop Rock Climbing Warehouse was located in the same shopping complex as Deborah’s favorite restaurant, Creek Shore Bar and Grille. The outdoor patio was lined with round, marble tables that were paired perfectly with pink metal chairs. Her favorite part about the chairs were the curved, low back design style that allowed her to move freely with animated laughter when her companion said something especially funny. This was the place Deborah most associated with joy. It was where she met her friends when someone had a birthday, an achievement to celebrate, or a bad date to vent about. It soon became apparent to Deborah that she had never once suggested meeting a potential suitor at the CSBG. There was fear in sullying her favorite spot with an unsavory online dating experience. Passing by without stopping felt wrong, like she was betraying something deep inside of herself.

A Little Snow and a Bottle of Merlot
“... And overnight, we’re gonna see twelve more inches of snow, so stay indoors and stay off those roads...” That’s what the weatherman was saying on the radio said as Francine slid her car into the ditch. She was a south Florida girl experiencing her first winter in northern Michigan, and it wasn’t going so well.

Merlot with Muskrats
Marjorie makes heads turn, followed by entire bodies. She’s just that kind of lady who instantly becomes the center of attention, wherever she goes. She runs her own bakery, and she’s good at it. Her doughnuts and other pastries are always topping “Best of the Twin Cities” lists.

First Date of the Year
Meghan took out an earbud to hear the faint chatter of morning birds outside her window. "Oh shoot. We did it again." A subdued glimmer of pale, blue light shone through the cracks of the blinds. Meghan had classes at noon and, although slight panic began accumulating inside of her, the satisfaction of a fulfilling call with her boyfriend blanketed her in tranquility.

Jetbird
The piercing sound of the alarm jolts my lifeless body into a catapult, with little to no remorse. Catching my balance, after tripping over a pile of dirty laundry, stacks of chocolate wrappers, couple tubs of ice cream, and a bottle of 2019 Jetbird, a Merlot I drank the night I lost my long time career. It's been a downfall to say the least. I can't remember the last time I felt this low, maybe in middle school, when I was a tad bit big? "Jennyroll", they'd call me. I hated it.
