dating
All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
Welcome to Cafe Noir
The idea was intriguing. Meeting someone for the first time in a dark restaurant. A literal blind date. It had been two years since she attempted dating another person, and the idea of looking in another man’s eyes felt exhausting. So, maybe this would do the trick.

Now, Where Were We?
I met him in the 6th grade. We quickly became acquainted with one another. In the beginning, my parents were strict about how often we could see each other. No spending time with him on school nights and limited time on the weekends. As I entered high school the rules lightened up and I was able to see him every day as long as all of my homework and chores were done first.

Weird AF
I sat at my vanity sipping a wine, merlot, to be exact. Looking at my reflection in the mirror I thought, “what are you doing?”. Twenty-eight and I still get nervous about a first date? I feel like I could write a novel on these. All the horrible ones, all of the awkward moments and all of the let downs. Those were the worst to think back on. Having what you thought was a good time and then being “ghosted” was not something I relish the thought of.

Little Blackbird
“Go on a date, she said. It’ll be fun, she said,” Jackie tossed her head back against the backseat of the Uber. Catching the driver’s wary eyes in the rearview mirror before they flitted back to the road, she realized she had spoken out loud. Great, now she was a crazy person. Honestly, an extra shift in the psych unit at the hospital was becoming more and more preferable than a blind date at this point. At least in that scenario she had an idea of what to expect. She could even call for back up if things got out of control.

Zinfandel
If she snuck out the bathroom window, she would get her sweater wet. Plus, you can’t very well take an umbrella into the bathroom with you. What do you say to excuse that? ‘Just like to be prepared!’ And then what if there isn’t even a bathroom window? Or there’s dead bugs on the sill? She huffed out a breath. Always such a romantic, Talia.

First Date With Merlot
Sometimes love is blind and causes one to fall. Sometimes love is late, but somehow, still on time. Sometimes love is rich with flavorful detail, constructing, connecting one boldly to a brand-new awareness, like drinking a glass of Bright Cellars merlot. Unexpected, unpredictable, but always welcomed.

Double-blind Taste Test
Have you ever been on a blind date? All of the dates I have been on are blind dates. That’s right, totally blind. It happened when I was fourteen. How and why it happened, well, that’s an entirely different story for another time. This is about my first, and only, double-blind date.

A Work of Art
His eyes flickered, and with a swift scan of the room he realised he wasn’t at home. He was comfortable though, and under no illusion that he wasn’t exactly where he was supposed to be. His eyelids twitched as they became accustomed to morning and the slim ray of sunshine that was peeking around the corner of a crack in the curtain. The room was hot and stuffy; he could feel the perspiration that swamped his legs beneath the duvet as though it had welded them together, the thick cover a futile and unnecessary overnight companion.

First Date Reprise
It was quite a few years ago now; Scott was so nervous for his first date with Chloe. He still says that was when he knew he was going to marry her. She agreed to watch the fourth of July fireworks with him, and Scott wanted nothing more than to impress her with the picnic he was planning. So, he went to their small town’s only grocery store and bought the fanciest meats and cheeses that he could find along with a freshly baked baguette and apricot jam. Scott walked down almost every isle of the store, but he felt like he was forgetting something. He continued to scan the rest of the grocery store trying to figure out what he was forgetting.

A Second Chance
I wonder how many people have ever ‘swiped right’ on their first love? After eight years with zero contact? That’s exactly what led to my sitting here with Daniel after not having seen him for over nine years, ever since he left our hometown to join the Army.
