dating
All about dating. First dates, three years into a relationship, Tinder, and more.
First Date
He had asked me on a date through text. He was reasonably cute too but not really my type. Even still, he was funny and kind and I liked that about him. I was surprised he even wanted my number that night, a week ago, when we first met. I was the only one at the haunted house who had their eyes glued shut the entire time through it. Our group was a train. A line of people each clinging to the person in front of us as we chugged along the “haunted” barn corridors. Screaming clowns and serial murderers with chainsaws jumped out at us from the shadows. Of course, my clever thought process was: they can’t scare you when you can’t see them. But they definitely noticed me as they shrieked “open your eyes little girl!” In eerie high pitched voices over and over again (for the record: I did not open my eyes). He apparently noticed me too as his fists held tightly to the back of my shirt. We were all a mix of screams and giggles as we traveled through the creaky wooden rooms and I could feel his laughter on my neck up until we reached the exit. Luckily there were no casualties. Afterwards when our adrenaline settled and the ‘fight or flight’ response turned into ‘chill and stand still’ he asked me for my number.

First Date Abroad
After three long years of being single, I declared 2020 was going to be my year! Little did I know that the world was about to go into lockdown for the foreseeable future. I lived alone and now had to stay away from everyone. So there went those plans along with many others. Luckily, I made it through to the other side and now here we are in 2021. I just listened to “Greenlights” by Matthew McConoughey and it gave me some much-needed inspiration. I was going to make my next first date one to never forget. Matthew says the only ceilings are man-made and I should chase after the things I want. What I want more than anything is a date with a hot man.

Snowy afternoon
The landscape seems wrapped in white smoke and scarcely anything could be seen from the falling snow. The whole mountain had unrolled into a winter slendor with the lake now churning from the blowing wind. There was a boat on the horizon. She was sure it belonged to her neighbor who lived not far from her. He loved to fish even in this kind of weather. The little silent snow flakes came swiftly down. She put her hand out and let them rest on it. The snow blew inside her collar. She was glad when she got to her gift shop. She unlocked the dodoor snd went inside.

Oh Sacramento
Dear Diary, How could I have known that the last tequila shot was one too much. Well, Kati and I woke up around 10.00am and got ready for the day after cleaning up the mess the part animals (including yours truly) made. It was a great night. Oh, note to yourself: leftover pizza is still better than fresh one.

Zimmerman’s Angels
I can feel my face turning red as I begin to actually put this story into writing! So I’m known to be painfully shy and socially awkward, at times. Always in my head, unless ,of course, I’ve had a few drinks. New to the dating scene, after 15 years, flirting was and is most definitely not one of my strong suits. I KNOW better! Just don’t do it, not ever.

Peace in the Storm
Peace in the Chaos Ryan and I stood at the edge of the massive lake and watched the distant sailboats on the horizon as they drifted over the crystal surface of the water. “That looks so great! We should go try it, Linn. I remembered seeing signs for boat rentals at the entrance to the park!”

On The Floor
I don’t particularly have a lot of regrets in my life, not that I am perfect by any means but at my age, you have to learn how to cope with the mistakes you made and move on. However, I do have one truly embarrassing moment that I do laugh about now mostly because it’s a decade old and well, I can’t change it so laughing about it is the only thing to do.

Second Chances
This was undoubtably the funniest, most inane first date, that was technically a second date, that June had ever been on. She paused in a state of incredulity and watched Kiernan as he gingerly sipped from his glass of wine. She stared across the table at Kiernan’s earnest face. “He honest to God, has no idea that we’ve been out before” she said to herself, utterly perplexed and mildly amused at the same time. “This situation is the raw life material that bad rom-coms are made of…” she contemplated. “And so this is what it has come to, my life has devolved into a crappy movie on the Lifetime channel.” June shuddered at the thought of being portrayed by a b-list actress with a layered lob haircut and partial low lights. “Ugh, and you know they’d style her in some kind of statement necklace” she anguished. “But who would play Kiernan?” This thought pre-occupied her, as the waiter re-filled their gluten free bread basket. “He’s not really a Brad or a Leo. Perhaps a Joaquin?”
