Is this a date?
I push open the door to the venue of my “not sure if this is a date” date. I’m met with ambient jazz music, light but seemingly sophisticated chatter from the other patrons and the intermittent clinking of wine glasses. I’m quite flattered that he thinks I’m refined enough to invite me along for a wine tasting but, then again, he did invite me last minute and in the place of a mate. This isn’t the first time he has invited me to something though, it’s just the first time I’ve been able to make it.

Second Chance
She saw something sparkling on the hill. It looked like a giant diamond. When they got closer she saw it was a glass domed house reflecting the light of the sitting sun. It was magnificent. She wouldn’t be here if she had not ended her marriage of 12 years with two kids 11 and 8, listened to her friend Sally’s suggestion that they take a college class together. Sally was trying to help her move on with her life. So they took together, a romantic poetry class.

I Looked Across
I look across the bar. I freeze, recognizing someone. There she is, standing in the middle of the bar, talking with her friends. Her long, blonde hair bounces on her shoulders as she laughs along with them, unconsciously covering her smile as she does so. Her green eyes glitter as the lights of the bar shine over her. I want to know what they’re laughing about, what they could possibly be talking about. I think of all the possibilities. Maybe they’re talking about all the homework they have to complete tonight. Maybe they’re talking about some crazy story another one of their friends told them earlier today. The thought crosses my mind that maybe they’re talking about a guy she walked by today and couldn’t help but think was kind of cute, and I wish that guy was me even though I know for a fact it isn’t. I gather all of my thoughts and come out of my trance. I walk over to the bar counter, take a seat, and order a beer. She’s only a couple feet away from me now. I can’t help but look right at her, entranced by her face. Her eyes. Her nose. Her smile. That one smile, a smile that beams like sunshine from hundreds of feet away despite the fact that she always covers it. I’ve always wanted to tell her how much I love that smile. How much it brightens my day.

I Have Something To Ask You
Taking deep breaths in and out, I walk up the three small steps toward the front door of her house. The brown wood door gleams in the sunlight that shines directly on it, and my heart skips a beat when I lay my eyes on the black handle of the door and the white doorbell to the left of it. What do I say? Should I have planned this better? How do I approach this? Does my hair look okay, or should I have listened to my mom and just let her comb it to make it look better? Seemingly millions of questions race through my mind in a matter of seconds, and even though I search for the answers, I can’t find a single one.

Are Sweet Dreams Really Made of This?
I was never the life of the party, never the one who men often approached in public. In my group of friends, I was considered “the ugly one”. I am 22 years old, and never once been on a date. I had a couple of situationships, and never anything real like my friends have with their partners. Ever since I was at the age where I started to really think about dating, I always fantasized what my first date would be like. But I don’t want my dreams to blind me from my current sad reality.

Sackcloth and Ashes
Last week I got a new teeshirt and I absolutely love it. I’m never going to wear it. I saw it on a YouTuber and I loved it so much I paused their video and ferreted through their merch store to buy it. That’s something I’ve never done before. It’s bright banana yellow with the words ‘Creatively Juicy’ splurged across the chest in vivid primary colours.
