People are now 'getting high' by smearing lip balm on their eyelids, a dangerous new TikTok craze.

They say the lip balm's peppermint will give you a rush and make you more awake.

A new TikTok fad has doctors worried: users are putting lip balm on their eyes to "get high" or "stay up all night" to study.

In the 2010s, a new trend called "Beezin" arose in which users used Burt's Bees lip balm around their eyes to simulate and enhance the effects of being high or intoxicated and to increase their level of alertness.

The craze from a decade ago was fleeting, but videos that have received millions of views on TikTok have sparked a revival.

Promoting such a concept, doctors cautioned, was "hazardous" since it may lead to "sight-threatening" skin disorders such eyelid dermatitis and infections.

In a video that went viral on TikTok, a guy can be seen using Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm on his eyelids before heading out to a party.

The traditional flavor of Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm includes peppermint, which may provide a cooling and tingling sensation on the lips.

When applied to the eyelids, peppermint oil has the similar effect, stinging slightly and leaving people's eyes feeling awake.

In the videos, individuals can be seen smearing the lip balm over their eyes before passing it on to others.

In addition to beeswax, peppermint oil is used in Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. The Medicated Moisturizing Lip Balm from this same company also has menthol in it.

Both of these chemicals, when administered topically, will have a cooling impact that may help stimulate alertness.

According to Dr. Mike Balgemann, an optometrist in Illinois, says the alcohol content of the menthol has a cooling impact on the eyes. But that's only a momentary impact, because over time it compresses blood vessels and dries up your eyes.

In most cases, getting menthol into the eyes would merely irritate your eyes, giving the false impression that the individual is more alert because of the pain. If you want to get rid of the foreign agent, this will make your eyes wet.

The'skin on our eyelids is the thinnest of any skin on our body,' he said, making clear that it is also among the most fragile and susceptible to damage.

Dr. Balgemann warned that exposure to the material in the eye might lead to glaucoma, cataracts, and infection.

'It's risky to use a menthol-based balm on your eyelashes,' he said. Infection may be spread from the lips to the eyes by using someone else's lip balm. An eye might lose its sight from any illness that affects its surface.

If you have a cold sore on your lip and put lip balm on your eyelid, you might have a herpes infection of the eye, which can cause serious damage to the cornea (the clear front part of the eye).

Consultant ophthalmologist at Newmedica and professor Bernard Chang said, "This is a potentially hazardous fad which we would urge anybody not to undertake." If lip balm gets into your eye, it might cause irritation since it includes many different kinds of natural oils.

Skin absorption is possible through the eyelids since they are vascular. Eyelid skin is very delicate and readily inflamed; this might lead to discomfort, redness, and even superficial abrasions.

Carly Musleh, a cosmetic chemist, also cautioned her followers to avoid the TikTok fad. It 'may induce contact dermatitis,' she said, if lip balm is used on the eyelids.

Dry, itchy, and irritated skin on or around the eyelid is a frequent symptom of eyelid dermatitis.

Burt's Bees told News Digital that just because their product is all-natural doesn't imply it should be used near the eyes.

They said, "Burt's Bees puts their Beeswax Lip Balm through the same rigorous safety testing as the rest of its products." Please follow the included instructions while using our goods that what they said in there label .

Milton Hom, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Optometric Times, has warned that this development may cause "a full-blown inflammatory reaction needing therapy." if you use lip balm on the eyelids. Please guys be careful .
