The Sundanese community is one of the numerous ethnic groups that reside in Indonesia. These people inhabit the lowlands of Java Island and have dwelled alongside the Javanese since time immemorial. Although the two groups are neighbors, their cultures differ greatly, particularly in terms of their language. The majority of Sundanese people live on the western side of Java Island, namely in the West Java and Banten provinces. This area is commonly referred to as Tanah Sunda, Tanah Pasundan, or Tanah Parahyangan (Sundaland).

A well-known dictum that the Sundanese people live by is "Silih Asah, Silih Asih, Silih Asuh," which translates to "Exchanging Ideas, Loving Each Other, and Caring for Each Other." This profound and philosophical statement illustrates the Sundanese character as being amiable, courteous, empathetic, and discerning. These values have been ingrained in the behavior and way of life of the Sundanese people since ancient times. Even in the face of globalization and modernization, many modern-day Sundanese still practices these principles as ethical guidelines in their daily lives. This has not significantly altered the original character of the majority of the Sundanese people, particularly those residing in rural areas.

In addition to the aforementioned statement, the Sundanese culture has ancient terms with deep philosophical meanings and values, such as the five ancient sciences known as the "5 Elmu Ki Sunda" (5 sciences of the Sundanese people). These sciences are closely linked to the concept of kanuragan, or the science of mystical power that was often possessed by ancestors in the past. However, as the Sundanese people's mindset has evolved, the definition of kanuragan is often misinterpreted as a form of magical power that is inherited across generations. In reality, these terms are symbolic expressions that have philosophical meanings for the Sundanese way of life.

An Inheritance from the Elders

The concept of "Kintunan Ti Sepuh Kanggo Anaking Jimat Awaking" is based on the belief that the wisdom and knowledge of the elders are crucial for the protection and well-being of the younger generations. The Sundanese believe that the elders possess valuable insights and experiences that can help their children and grandchildren navigate the challenges of life and achieve success.

In the context of Ki Sunda, "Kintunan Ti Sepuh Kanggo Anaking Jimat Awaking" means that the spiritual and cultural practices of the elders should be passed down to the younger generations as a means of self-protection. The Sundanese believe that these practices can help the younger generations develop inner strength, resilience, and the ability to overcome adversity.
