Sight Unseen
In some ways, Stephen King's stories are like looking through a keyhole, and having a cockroach crawl out onto your face. There is much more substance to these stories than a simple glimpse through a keyhole can reveal. I already reviewed Stephen King Goes to the Movies, an anthology of short stories, on Goodreads (lol gotta plug my brand), so I thought that I should do something a little more on this site. I chose to observe one of the King's favorite themes; the abject subverting the mundane into something much more than meets the eye. Across the collection of short stories, all characters, settings and even small props, are not what they seem. They are in fact, something more.

Reed Alexander's Horror Review of 'Doom: Annihilation' (2019)
You may remember from my review of the original Doom (2005), that fans were unnecessarily critical of it for not really using any of the video game cannon. My response to this was, "So the fuck what?" It had all the right elements for a fun action/horror, and still had enough similarities with the video game franchise to call itself Doom. It also pioneered the FPS movie years before things like Hardcore Harry or Found Footage Hybrids like Chernobyl Diaries.

Dream State Part 5
Chapter 5:Hello My Love. The nurse did not seem very interested in care for the patients within the walls of this grey stone building of insanity, she instructed almost as if she was a barking rabid dog for me to follow her as she led me from my padded cell to a room down the far end of the corridor. The door was closed to the room with bold black letters reading 'Dr. J. Richmond.' The nurse opened the door wide leading me to a chair in front of the desk, were a balding skinny man who seemed to be in his mid sixties sat writing notes. His white shirt seems crumpled like he had been wearing it for days, his eyes looked swollen and sore as though he had worked longer than an 18 hour shift, with no sleep between shifts and this was the doctor I had agreed to help me recover from what seemed to be my ever slipping sanity.

The Family Tree
A carcass of metal and scrap lay silent. Green nature snuffs out the structure covering its lifeless walls with life. A tree stands powerfully in the middle of the ruins. Its branches and roots hug the structure like a mother embracing her child. The tree’s leaves sing a lullaby in the wind as its branches sway back and forth, lovingly caressing the surrounding wilds. Patches of flowers create figures from mounds of earth. The flowers of every color imaginable surround the tree with admiration as she opens up her leaves to let beams of light softly kiss their petals. Dark clouds slowly crawl across the sky blocking the rays nutrients. Rain begins to quietly fall first hitting the tree and then rolling off the leaves and branches like tears. The tears land atop the flowers and the rest of the surrounding wilds, quenching their thirst. Faint whispers come from the tree’s trunk emitting ghostly memories. Rain continues to drip and run down the tree as if it softly weeps for the past and nurtures the present.

‘Lake Of Death’ is a Little Too Old Fashioned
For a country with a population of only five million people, Norway punches above its weight in the world of scary movies. Maybe it’s the unfathomable depths of the fjords, maybe it’s the long dark winters, or maybe it’s the trauma of eating lutefisk, but the Norwegians understand horror. Will Lake Of Death create its own cult following like many Norwegian properties to come before, such as Troll Hunter, Dead Snow, or Rare Exports?

Fraternal Quinns
Quinn let the rising heat from the stove burner warm her cheeks as she waited for the water in the tea kettle to boil. She detached from her thoughts to turn her attention back towards the TV to continue watching tonight’s entertainment. Her ears picked up the all too familiar tea kettle whistle and she carefully poured the scalding water into her mug. She reached for her phone to check her messages while the tea ruminated. When she felt enough time had passed, she glided her fingers around the mug’s handle and walked around to continue watching TV. As Quinn nestled into her couch corner, her shoulders dropped and the wave of calm crested, crashed, and washed over her as each muscle in her body began to relax.

Saving Maddie
They hugged one final time before Maddie turned and walked out of her life forever. Carrie sat there, still in disbelief. She couldn’t believe that she had just said goodbye to the love of her life. They had been together for 3 years, nearing four in June, and ending it didn’t sit right with either of them. Unfortunately, neither of them was going to admit that they were not ready to give each other up. A few days had gone by, and though the girls had sworn they would remain the best of friends, Maddie had been quiet. There was no text, no call, no form of communication at all. Carrie was worried, so she bit her tongue and called, but no answer. Carrie texted Maddie and told her to meet her at their treehouse. When she got there, she was shocked to find Maddie’s vgvdebag, and her cell phone thrown across the grass along with some of her other belongings. Carrie picked up the cell phone and looked at the message on the screen. It was supposed to be sent to her. “In danger, being followed.” The text was never sent. Whatever was following Maddie had gotten to her. Carrie reached into her pocket and grabbed her cell phone. Just as she was about to dial 911, a video popped up. Carrie opened it to find a very disturbing clip. Maddie was tied up and looked as though she had been beaten. What horrified Carrie most was her clothing. She had been wearing the same outfit from the day they broke up. No wonder she had not reached out, she had been missing for about three days. Carrie stared at the screen as silent tears streamed down her face. “If you want to see her alive again” a deep ominous voice from the video started “you need to save her.” “WHO ARE YOU???” Carrie yelled at the phone screen. “That is of no importance at this time,” the voice replied. “If you love this girl as much as you have told her, save her.” “I will. You bet your pathetic ass I will. And when I do, you’d better hope that there is someone to save you.”Carrie practically screamed at the video. The video disappeared once it ended. There was no evidence of it anywhere. Carrie knew what she needed to do, and for some reason, she felt like she had to do this on her own. No authorities could be involved. Carrie gathered up Maddie’s things and headed home. One thing Carrie knew for sure was that she had to get Maddie back safe. She was unsure what she would do without her. Carrie got home, packed a few outfits and other necessities. She wrote a note telling her parents that she was going to be okay and not to worry. She climbed out of her bedroom window and stood there for a second. Staring at the trees. “I’m coming for you, Maddie.” were the last words she spoke before walking off into the night.
