My Second Taste of Freedom
My father always said your first taste of freedom is learning how to ride a bike. I was a late bloomer in that aspect. Not learning to ride until about eight years old. I remember the freedom and euphoria pulsing through my veins. I eagerly filled my lungs with the cool air whipping past my face. It was very free, simple, and pure.

It is hard to believe that it was less than a century ago that, in many parts of France, we poor, weak fools still held fast to the superstitious belief that it was only a matter of giving our souls over to the devil, enacted in rituals both cruel and fanatic, for us to get everything we wanted from this diabolical personage; and it is not more than a century ago that the adventure that we are going to tell about occured in one of our southern provinces, where it is still attested to today on the official histories of two cities and furthermore, covered with the most heartfelt personal testimonies to convince the skeptical. The reader may believe it, or may not; we speak only after having verified it; certainly we cannot guarantee it as fact, but we certify to him that more than one hundred thousand souls did believe it, and that more than fifty thousand can still attest today the authenticity with which it is recorded.

The Doctor's Visit
It rained quietly that night. My mother was in her room coughing up dark red liquid from her cracked lips. I gazed out the hallway window patiently, holding the ragged doll I've owned since I was a child. Death darkened the streets of London, and childhood memories were all I had left to cherish. Things were better then, regardless of our nonexistent moneys.

the mailbox
Opening your eyes, you find yourself standing a few feet away from your mailbox. It’s open but you don’t remember opening it. In fact, you can’t even remember how you got there. You try to recall the events that led you to this moment, but there’s a pounding in the back of your head that's making it difficult for you to think straight. You begin looking around and your confusion continues to grow as you take in your surroundings. To your right you see an unusual amount of cars lined up next to the curb and in your driveway. Your eyes are going in and out of focus, but you’re able to recognize one of the cars as your cousin’s. You wonder why she didn’t call ahead to tell you that she was coming to visit. Turning slightly to your left, your gaze travels to the pile of mail inside of your mailbox. Something in the pile stands out to you; a letter. The pounding in your head increases as you step forward to retrieve the letter and you wonder where the headache even came from. The letter now in your grasp, you see that there is no return address and you get an eerie feeling that something is wrong. Quickly, you turn around to make sure there’s no one behind you, and you begin making your way towards the front door of your house. As you cross the lawn you open the letter and begin to read it.

Glass Nightmares
The Girl’s eyes opened, and she groaned. There was a… wetness around her, and a sharp, almost unbearable pain in her arms. Blinking a few times, she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes with her left wrist, and let out a small, strangled cry of pain as something pushed deeper into her wrist. The wetness lingered at her eye, and she tried to blink it away, but it only irritated her eye further. Struggling to sit up, The Girl found she’d been laying on the ground, in a small puddle of blood, and a much larger field of shattered glass.

Darkness of the Depths
From rippling waves that crash the shore line pulling shells, sand and pebbles alike back and forth within their tidal current, drifting them within and with out the depths of the ocean. For we mere mortals see the ocean in its shimmers of beautiful blues and hazy greens, yet deep within the beauty of tranquillity is a darkness that lurks deep before any safe level for a submarine. For hundreds of years sailors have feared the darkness of the depths and the creatures that sing like angels, yet are the cruellest of all creation.
