Darkness of the Depths

Another mermaid inspired horror short story, this was originally a poem that I wrote but wanted to rewrite it as more of a short story.

From rippling waves that crash the shore line pulling shells, sand and pebbles alike back and forth within their tidal current, drifting them within and with out the depths of the ocean. For we mere mortals see the ocean in its shimmers of beautiful blues and hazy greens, yet deep within the beauty of tranquillity is a darkness that lurks deep before any safe level for a submarine. For hundreds of years sailors have feared the darkness of the depths and the creatures that sing like angels, yet are the cruellest of all creation.

Creatures that swim though rocky depths with iridescent tails that glitter in the moonlight. The more beautiful the creature is that of the female form but they are also the most deadly, for it is them that will pull sailors from their ships dragging them down to the ruins of a forgotten land, a sailor may think that he is safe in their caresses, but they pull sailors to the darkest depths of oceans deep where fish are so alien in looks they are almost within another world.

But although these creatures are dark they fear only one, the witch of the seas. Although she is female with a unspeakable beauty, from waist down she is an octopi with tentacles that grip her prey, suffocating them, leaving small circular suction marks on the flesh of her prey. A daughter of a forgotten King of the depths and a banished princess.

Her throne of skulls stands in the darkest cave on the sand covered floor of the ocean, no mortal has been to the depths of her cavern, for she is safe here from their interference and entrapment. Beside her throne her body guards wait for any that trespass into her domain, male creatures of the depths, although beautiful and strong they are warriors who fear the females of their race but fear most of all their Queen.

But all of the creatures of these darkest depths feed off of those who walk upon dry land, they are like leeches of the sea that lurk within caves where no light can reach them and these creature from below only come to the surface of the crashing waves during storms, hunting for mortal men to pull down to the depths to feast upon.

But there is more to this darkness of the world unseen, for there is an island that even the merfolk fear and swim as far from it as they can. An island small, yet covered in lush evergreen trees that reach high toward the skies, but this island seems void of seasons and day light. It is always warm and always seems night upon this island, none who have walked upon this earth bound island have ever left it.

For mortal man have wandered freely into the dark forests for they often only see the flashes of lights that twinkle suddenly out the corner of their eyes, but these men are to blind to truly see the elegant slender figures that watch from the branches of the thick trees.

These lights that shimmer and glitter are the few fae that remain on this world. Their clothes made from layers of petals from the flowers which grow within the darkness, the flowers themselves are ruby red and seem to glow in the moonlight with the scent so sweet it is intoxicating to any unsuspecting mortal, a perfume that drugs them to ones will. The fairies wings are not like what is in any known in story book, they are not beautiful and bright as you would expect they are feathered and grey but they are neither angel nor demon, just forgotten creatures that glide about the air within the forest of darkness upon an island which they call home.

They do not feed off mortal man for you see they are no male fairies, only female, for their need is far more than the merfolk's need for food. For fairies need to mate but they only ever seem to give birth to females, so with elegant bodies they enslave any wandering foolish man upon their island, making him a slave to the fairies deepest desire. But mortal men are so fragile and die so young that the fairies have lost many mortal men to their desires, but willingly give the bodies away to the ocean but no merfolk will come and feed from the flesh and blood of these bodies.

It is rumoured that if a Mermen was entrapped by a fairy they would finally gain a male child of fairy kind, but Mermen are kept away from this island for it is only the females that are allowed to hunt for prey as the fairies can not be trust to not try and entrap a merman. And so the world does not see what truly lurks within the darkness of the depths of any ocean so serene and beautiful, yet all beauty holds great power and can be the cruellest of all of the mortal world, for these elements are doorways to other realms of being but we of mortal state are still too young to understand these creature of air and water.
