My Hero Academia
A specific “guilty-pleasure binge” would not describe my relationship with my favorite television shows. First of all, my personal relationship with TV has changed drastically since the Coronavirus pandemic began. I think a lot of us can remember a time when there was nothing left to do. Your house had been cleaned at least a dozen times. You’ve tried all of the new meal recipes you could manage without starting a kitchen fire. You’ve video chat all of your friends and family so much you didn’t care to see their faces for another minute; it was only a reminder of how you couldn’t be with them. So, as the biggest streaming platforms report, we all began to binge watch any and everything that could help us escape for even a moment. I won’t go over the stats because this article is about my guilty pleasure- not the Top 10 rankings on Netflix.

I WANT TO BELIEVE …in the undying loyalty and friendship of my most cherished television duo – FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The dynamic of this classic skeptic-versus-believer twosome makes for grade A, totally bingeworthy television entertainment. Beyond being a sci-fi lover’s mainstream dream, The X-Files solidified itself in both the horror and drama genres. The X-Files has it all: aliens, conspiracy theories, romance, complicated family relationships, monsters from international folklore, religious overtones, humor, time travel…you get the picture. This show has a little something for everyone, adults and youngsters alike. And that is where my devotion to Mulder, the patron saint of conspiracy theorists, and Dana Scully, our lady of everlasting incredulity, begins.

When speaking amongst friends about what TV shows they watch I like to sit back and listen. I hear mentions of this and that, of whatever new Netflix-featured show there is, and then the room becomes silent. Everyone in unison turns to me and someone belts, “What are you watching right now, Bella?”. I usually try to avoid the answer, until I finally give up and admit to watching Gilmore Girls, again- for the fifth time. Groans always immediately fill the room.

For years, I saw Gordon Ramsay as a villain. On Hell’s Kitchen, a reality cooking show competition, he was and still is portrayed as a passionate, perfectionist chef with a fiery temper, directing expletive after expletive at some donkey (GR code for ignoramus). I remember watching the Hell’s Kitchen commercials and hearing all the bleeped out swearing thinking, “Oh, what a terrible man. Ugh! He’s so angry and foul.” He’d explode at these actual professional chefs he considered inadequate, often incompetent (who may not have been that bad, but he certainly reacted to them and their cooking that way). I just couldn’t see GR’s appeal, like who enjoys watching some volatile British man slandering and demeaning people who are earnestly trying their best.
Kerry EldredPublished 3 years ago in GeeksTable Top Role Playing Games
Table Top Role Playing Games, TTRPGs; the immersive fantasy adventure, space exploration, eldritch horror, or dungeon crawl that has helped people escape to a realm full of options and wonder. I'm talking about, Pathfinder, Star Wars, Warhammer, Starfinder, Call of Cthulhu, and of course, Dungeons and Dragons. There are so many more out there, it is hard to keep track and perhaps pick out a new system to try. These games can be really intimidating if you are new. You see weird shaped dice, sheets with weird numbers, and the math; let us not forget about the math. These types of games were rare in my school growing up on a military base. The popular game of the times at my school was Magic the Gathering. I personally didn't get into the card game Magic. I kind of felt like there was too much into it and you had to carry those cards around everywhere you went. (boy was I in for a surprise when I started playing D&D, we damn near carried a library with us) There wasn't a whole lot of interest in something like D&D at a military DoD school at Camp Lejeune, NC. I had known of its existence in the early 90s because, of all things, an after church conversation about it to another kid my age. He started to tell of this guy named Gary Gygax, and how he created this amazing world and you roll a bunch of dice and you kill a bunch of monsters. Parents were told of its association with the occult and Satanism, otherwise known as The Satanic Panic. Being a hardcore practicing Catholic at the time and being around thirteen years of age; it sparked my interest. It was hard to go to local gaming shops and book stores to research this thing called Dungeons and Dragons; until a friend said that their father, a Naval Corpsman if memory serves me right, had a complete book collection of 2nd Edition D&D that he would be willing to let us read. Furthermore, he said that he was able to find most of the books at the base library, while he was deployed. On one Saturday morning, we, five friends, asked our parents for a ride to the base library, located next to a Burger King, the main military exchange (think shopping mall), and my favorite pizza place, Anthony's Pizza, the most greasy slice of greatness you'll ever have. We all asked the librarian, which now I think about it, was a senior in high school at the time, the sister of our classmate. She was beautiful and intimidating as all hell to talk to. We finally got the words out of our mouths and were led to a section in the middle of the library called "Fiction Games." The size of our base library was nothing to laugh at, it was the size of a small elementary school. I remember they had rooms you could check out and listen to vinyl records, cd's, and watch movies on VHS and laser disc. You could have pizza delivered for private parties in the back. You could even check out Sega, Nintendo, and PC games for up to a month. It was all free to military and us dependents. Well anyway, we found the section "Fiction Games" and it was a magical experience. The first book I pulled off the shelf was a book called Dungeon Master Guide. On the cover was a man in a green wizard robe opening a door. The artwork was incredible. The second book I pulled, Players Handbook; and this one had a long white bearded wizard and it looked like it was somehow controlling a winged creature. We. Were. Hooked. We went to check out these books and to our surprise, we were not old enough to take these books without a parent. Because of the stigma surrounding these books, I think I remember you had to be sixteen or older to check them out. Ridiculous right? Well, we stayed and read as much as we could. We looked at everything that were available to us. We came back multiple times and Xerox copied pages of the books for our game we started. All of this started something in me that I absolutely loved, and that was the art of storytelling. I'm thirty-eight years old and I have the same love for these games as I did when I was fourteen. I have started groups, made new friends; games like Pathfinder, Warhammer, Call of Cthulhu have opened my eyes to new stories and adventures.
Anthony DiazPublished 3 years ago in GeeksCaptain's Log: A Bunch of Our Ship Fell Off, and Nobody Likes Me
My childhood was spent primarily in jean overalls and oversized Starter jackets whilst riding a bicycle that I thought defied the speed of light. It was a time before smart phones became the most coveted possession. It was the dawn of reality television, online shopping, and music that defined teenage angst. It was a time to be daring, a time to push the limits of standards and practices of public broadcasting. Nightly news shows were the first time I ever acknowledged current events, though most of it went over my head. Sometimes I glanced at the television whenever my parents watched Seinfeld. I wondered how they could watch something so vapid. Fast forward to now, however, and I will tell you with a smile that Seinfeld is sitcom royalty.

I didn't have much of a childhood growing up. I wanted to have fun and play video games. I wanted to go hang out with my friends on the weekends. I would have loved to join the basketball team, just to get away from my parents. Nothing happened. I didn't get that kind of childhood. I worked, and worked hard. All weekend, and every morning before the sun came up. No, I didn't grow up with TV even though I was born in the 90's. It wasn't much fun. The point is that because I didn't have a childhood, I have spent the last ten years being a kid. (A kid with a full time job that is.)

Despite the scandalous negative reviews the last season received, shame is no longer part of my vocabulary, therefore, I can finally admit that binge watching Game of thrones is my still guilty pleasure.

A couple of days ago, I got dragged down a rabbit hole by a purple dinosaur and it all started when I was digging through boxes in my parents' house and found a familiar white VHS tape.

I remember the time, when I was in the middle of my teens, which was about 15 years ago. The world would get to real sometimes, too physical in my case and I wanted to be a hero, a hero in my father's eyes and others, who were dear to me. It was my phantasy, my escape, my dream. It was that time when I saw those characters in splendid costumes, teenage boys and girls, fighting with fiery eyes full of vigilant piercing determination to destroy everything that lies in their way, mainly giant monsters, called angels, but never got an opportunity to watch it. About ten days ago, thanks to my friend's advice I finally did see it. If there are robots, a dystopian world, beautiful girls, guys, school uniforms, the concept of which I could relate to still, even remember how much I hated to iron that uniform much less wearing it just because of someone's rules.
