“There weren’t always dragons in the valley”, my mother said in a bewildered yet exasperated tone. Being only a child at the time of their incursion, I could not comprehend the gravity these creatures’ existence had. “Fiona, there is a reason why they are here; we just have to find that reason,” my father, an accomplished biologist, said with curiosity and empathy. “Mark, they are dangerous! Didn’t one of those beasts take your uncle from you? Do you want the same to happen to you?”. These words cut my father deeply and though they were not born of malice, he would carry them like colossal weights upon his shoulders for nearly two decades.

The Rise of the Valley
There weren't always dragons in the valley. There weren't a lot of things in the valley. But that's were it stopped. Earth hasn't been the same since they started coming. We don't know how or when, but they just started showing up in the sky one day. Big creatures, floating around like they were in the sea, but above us in the air.

The Dragons of the New World
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. In the past dragons were great, powerful, and a rare sight to see. They were old and special beings which dispensed wisdom if an adventurer helped them in a time of need. Everything changed in the early 1900’s. It was everyone’s belief that dragons sought after special metals because of their concentration west of the Rockies during the gold rush. After Las Vegas was built in 1905 however, they started flocking to the valley where Sin City was located.

Dragaland
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. When they came the Alatusian people were almost lost to history, to be nothing more than the faceless victims of tragedy, their existence whittled down to a lesson for a new generation. They were spared that reduced fate by their Council of Elders, who held on to threads of magic, dwindling in their population under the scorch of paranoia, that simmered in the wake of a season of failed crops. A group of the town’s best weavers and builders were spared the fiery end of their brethren, saved by the elders, ushered through their burning village under the protection of long unused enchantments, and wailing screams. They hid themselves on the edge of the Calamadian forest, bereaved and destitute. While the brave elders suffered greatly from the exertions of their heroism, they agreed to a final sacrifice, they would collect their remaining strength for one last act of precious magic, and give the last of their power to a child so small she had not yet left the safety of her mother’s womb. Little Alta was born with the remnants of the elder’s magic in her veins, and in this little girl the hope of her people grew with her.

Veil of Dragons
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Admittedly, a great opening salvo. That should set things up nicely. She even had a fantastic riff on the vielle to go along. But like so many one-liners before, this was stuck in her head and she couldn't get past it.

Atreya in the Valley of Dragons
Chapter 1 I. There weren’t always dragons in the valley. For the longest time it was just us. The Jenari inhabited this land for generations. Plague, famine, war… yet through it all, we survived. A Deep connection to the land and the magic it possessed is the special gift granted to us by Mother Eternity. Our technology is highly cherished and has allowed us to create healthy trade routes with the outside realms. Exports alone can support society. This allows us to focus on creating beautiful art and culture that people travel far and wide to experience. At first the valley wasn’t keen on allowing outsiders to cross our borders, but over time people came to accept the diversity and enrichment of our culture that stemmed from it. Our valley is a rare melting pot in a massively segregated world and the Jenari are flourishing because of it. All are welcome… except dragons.

The Fall of the Undying
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. That simple fact represented the complete failure of the Elder’s promises. From his earliest memories, Seran could recall the calm teachings of the Elder. She would shift in her humble wooden chair and smile slightly, wrinkles crowning her face with an air of dignity and authority. Seran and all his young peers would sit cross-legged, forming a semicircle in front of her as she told tales of struggles past. She spoke of days when fear was more common than hope. She spoke of a world collapsing on itself, civilizations tumbling down as darkness covered the land. But in spite of everything, the Valley remained. The humble people of the Elkoi and the divine race of dragons stayed safe in this peaceful vale, a sole beacon in a dark world. There had always been dragons in the Valley, the Elder said, and there always would be. They were a sacred and deathless race, forever protectors of this land.
