DoorDash, I Wish I Knew How to Quit You. Top Story - March 2021.
During the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, both my husband and I, like the rest of the world stopped going to the office for work. I ended my job all together and he set up his home office to work from home. In the beginning it was a fun and new adventure for us both. I was determined to get fit, make meals every day, and reap the benefits of being a stay-at-home mom again for the second time in my life. The reality of it though, was that none of that actually happened.

A Cultural Cocktail
The even hum of multiple conversations happening simultaneously, coupled with the clacking of the ticket printer, has grown more comforting as the years draw on. Only the ambiance has changed; red silk draped across the ceiling, romantic lighting, and lofi remixes to Chinese folk music is the newest setting of my melodramatic drama. Two Michelin stars, the Chef and owner Jonathan Fèng, is barely 32. The books are open for reservations starting in May of 2022. Chef Fèng takes personal offense to the fact that Americans recognize Chinese food as cheap and greasy, so he’s made it his life’s mission to showcase its exemplary qualities.

Delicious Caribbean Food
The lovely West Indies island of Barbados is sometimes also called "The Land Of the Flying Fish." The favorite local seafood to make the national dish called Coucou and Flying Fish is the delicious fish caught in the warm waters surrounding the island. These are foot-long fish, which "fly" over the water up to 200 ft. The fish is steamed and cooked with onions, lime juice, spices, and vegetables and all served on a bed of polenta-like cornmeal or fried and accompanied by a spicy sauce.

The Diamond in the Rough
Today (Wednesday) was payday for me and I wanted to celebrate and splurge because I made it through another month without having to pawn anything. That's a joke, but if you live check to check like I do, then you know that a little splurge can surely do wonders for cheering up the spirit. I asked my husband if we could do a "memory lane" stroll through my favorite town in Pinellas County: Gulfport. He agreed and we chatted as I gave praise to all the beautiful houses there as we drove up main street. I saw some new buildings and businesses, remembered the places I stayed when I was getting to know the town, and then had him drive off the beaten path to see if the old "greasy spoon" was where I used to dine with my mom. It is, but it's no longer a greasy spoon. It has been updated and given a face lift. The outside has fresh paint and stylish tables, the inside is cleaner and has a new look, and it is now called "Comfort Cafe" with the little French chef logo. It's absolutely charming and we had a lovely lunch there.

Everything every dream
Shaken from my sleep from the sound of the train rattling along the tracks. I woke up to the gaze of a woman and her young daughter sitting across from me. The woman’s eyes nearly peering into my soul. I wasn’t certain but I could only imagine she knew just like I did that I wasn’t supposed to be on this train. Here I was dressed in a black hoodie, jeans, black combat boots covered in dried up mud and pieces of grass. I stood out like a sore thumb.

Polish Delicatessens
I told Ania about my memory of the Barony Street delicatessen in Edinburgh. In 1979, when I had been a postgraduate architect in the city, long before we had met. I used to buy a sandwich there to take into the Minto House studio. The shop was long, running back from the door, and getting darker toward the back. A glass-fronted display cabinet ran the full length of the room. You came in from the street on the left, and to the right behind the long counter was the shopkeeper's territory. She was a dear old woman who spoke no English. And anyone else I would meet in the shop would also be old, slow, wearing heavy brown clothes. They would speak no English. I think they usually carried Polish newspapers. Perhaps that last detail is just an invention of memory.

Chicken and Rosemary Meatballs with Sautéed Tomatoes and Spinach
These chicken meatballs are something I've been thinking about this one for a while, but have only recently gotten around to making it. I wanted to try something different with meatballs besides beef and veal. I haven't tried it yet, but I would imagine this would go great with lamb in place of the chicken. I'm a big fan of the lamb and rosemary flavor profile. No matter which protein you use, you're welcome to experiment with recipe, these meatballs will go great with a pasta dish!
