If you’re used to using breadcrumbs in the kitchen, then we have some tips for you. Find out how to make homemade breadcrumbs and, more importantly, how to enhance them.

We must acknowledge that it’s much easier to buy a bag of breadcrumbs from the store, and perhaps, for many, this may not make sense. However, we believe that all things made at home are much better and have a much better taste.

We’ll also tell you that you can make breadcrumbs from any type of bread, so if you’re used to buying whole wheat bread or any kind of bread with seeds, it will taste much better than the one made from white bread.

Moreover, if you’re accustomed to making homemade bread, it means that nothing goes to waste, and everything will be utilized. Any stale bread can be transformed into breadcrumbs.

This homemade breadcrumbs can be made using a food processor or a grater; all you need is for the bread to be very dry, and your tool will take care of the rest. The bread will be finely ground into high-quality breadcrumbs, so you can use them in other dishes.

If the bread is not completely dry, you can wait for a few days until it dries out. However, here comes the risk of mold formation, so you will need to put it in the oven.

So, the first step to start making homemade breadcrumbs is to cut the bread into cubes and then let it dry. However, don’t forget to cover it with a cloth to protect it from flies.

As mentioned before, you can also dry the bread in the oven. Place the bread cubes on a baking sheet, and then they will go into the oven for 30 minutes at a temperature of 180 degrees Celsius or until they become golden brown.

Remove the bread from the oven, let it cool and firm up, and then put it in the food processor to grind it into crumbs.

I mentioned at the beginning of this article that this homemade breadcrumbs can be enhanced. Well, when preparing it, you can add dried herbs (Herbes de Provence, basil, rosemary, oregano), parmesan cheese, or granulated garlic. Surely, it will be much better than store-bought ones, thus improving the taste of your dishes!

Now that you’ve made the breadcrumbs, it’s good to know how to store them. Well, the simplest way is to put them in paper bags or in an airtight jar. If kept in dry spaces, the breadcrumbs will last for months!

WHAT IS HOMEMADE BREADCRUMBS USED FOR?

Homemade breadcrumbs are primarily used for breading, but their uses are much more widespread.

Breadcrumbs help form a crispy crust (like a shell) that protects the meat inside and helps it cook properly. Moreover, the golden crust acts as a barrier between the meat and the frying oil. That's why breaded cutlets or schnitzels are not soaked in oil like those coated only with egg and flour!
