I Don’t Have $1 Million. I’m Still Feeding My Goose.
Every payday I do one thing. I pay bills, set aside what the family needs, and move the small remainder into a card I rarely touch. The amount is small enough that I would rather not say it out loud. A few days later I open the app and see the number has risen since last month. Something in me brightens. The feeling is ordinary and solid, like pulling a sun-dried blanket over my hands.

Four Workers, Ten Dependents: The Population Math That Breaks Family Budgets
A household with four grandparents, two working adults, and one child does not need a demographic model to feel the pressure. The monthly paycheck splits into four piles: pension top-ups and medical bills for the old, mortgage and utilities, childcare and school fees, and a reserve for the next emergency. When one pile grows, another shrinks. Fertility is usually the pile that disappears.

10 Home Accessibility Upgrades for Safer, More Independent Living in 2026
A home that once felt easy to navigate can become challenging when mobility needs change. Stairs, narrow pathways, slippery bathroom floors and even ordinary door handles can create obstacles for older adults and people who use wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids.

The Night I Stopped Standing in My Daughter’s Doorway
At 8:30 in the evening, the dishes hit the dining table. Steam from the tomato egg drop soup curled into the air. Braised pork ribs. Stir-fried greens with too much garlic—I'd been distracted. My back ached from standing in the kitchen since I got home at 6:15. Before that, I'd been at my desk since 5:30 AM, grading papers.

I Used to Think Parents Didn’t Need to Learn Parenting. Then I Read These 3 Stories.
Start with three old stories. The first happened to a university student. His mother numbered all his clothes in advance and wrote down which piece to wear on which day. Inside the wardrobe door was a printed chart: Monday to Sunday, tops, pants, jackets, numbered from 1 to 21. One day the weather turned cold. He wore clothes according to his mother’s numbers. That day’s number was a thin windbreaker. At noon he began sneezing. By evening he had a fever. He called his mother and demanded, “Why did you make me wear this today?” His mother said apologetically, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know it would turn cold.” He did not say, “I could have changed by myself.” He said, “Why didn’t you check the weather forecast?”

My Child Kept Saying "I Can't." Then I Remembered My Own Parking Meltdown.
A puzzle piece falls out. The child throws the piece in his hand onto the table and says, "I can't do it." He pushes the puzzle away, leans back, looks elsewhere.

The Backpack Behind the Door: When Your Seventh Grader Refuses to Go to School
At 6:30 in the morning, the alarm rang for the third time. You stood outside your child’s door. Your hand went up. You lowered it. On the doorknob hung a charm from last year’s autumn field trip. A blue whale with chipped paint. Inside, nothing. You knew he was awake. You also knew that if you pulled off the blanket again, the day would turn into silence, arguments, slammed doors, or something worse.

The Red Light Was On, and My Child Asked Why We Didn’t Cross
At 7:20 in the morning, at the intersection. Red light. The child’s left hand is in my grip. His right hand carries the schoolbag. The water bottle in the side pocket sways back and forth. My phone buzzes in my pants pocket. The work group chat is demanding a clock-in. Eight hundred meters to school, three stops to work. The child looks up: “Dad, there’s no car. Why don’t we go?”

My Father Never Learned WeChat Pay. So I Made His Payment Code His Lock Screen.
In 2017, my father said he wanted a new phone. He asked me to go with him to town. The phone shop had glass counters and rows of machines. He picked a smartphone that cost four hundred yuan. It took almost a minute to turn on. The screen lit up. The icons were blurry. One tap and an ad popped up. I told him this phone was not worth taking for free. He asked what he should buy. At home I ordered a used first-generation iPhone SE from JD.com . When it arrived, I checked the battery, screen, and camera. No problems. I gave it to him. I said the original price was over two thousand, and I got it for eight hundred. He believed me. He was happy.

Chen Sui was thirteen when her parents argued in the kitchen. A bowl knocked against the sink. She stood in the doorway, fingers curled around the frame. No one called her in to decide who was right.
