The Band Tragedy Could Not Silence
The Bar-Kays are one of the most prolific and resilient groups of musicians, past and present. They began their illustrious careers fresh out of high school in Memphis, TN, and found success very early on. That success came with several tragedies, but the band always survived, in spite of them. While researching the backstory for this blog, I learned just how many tragedies would befall the group throughout the years, and how strong it had made them. I also learned of their overwhelming success.

Memphis' Pride and Joy: Brennan Villines
I was in the middle of working on a blog I had been researching for over a week, and something happened which made me abandon it immediately and change course. Scrolling through social media two days ago, I ran across a post from one of my former Young Avenue Sound neighbors. If you have read any of my previous work, you know well the fondness I have for this place and its inhabitants. I am the self-proclaimed “studio mom” as I am a few years older, and already hold the maternal role for four other humans (five if you count my dad who will get into more trouble than the kids). I moved in years ago, following the death of my husband, and while most of them have known each other for many years, I was a newcomer. They welcomed me like an old friend. Needless to say, it is like a home to me.

#901Spotlight: Preesh Fest
Revisited Josh Stevens of Stu Stu Studios Memphis, for his new Preesh Festival June 8th and we took a few pictures and videos to share. This new festival with 19 acts on three stages, in two venues has been in the making for quite a while, and affectionately named 'Preesh Fest' short for Thanks 'PreciateIt. When one hears why it came into be in the first place, you totally understand the concept behind the name. This is the brain child of our former #901Spotlight feature, Josh Stevens and he did this as a thanks to the many local and touring bands he has worked with, did last minute openings, and just been all around decent people in their dealings. Thirty minute performances made for quick transitions between bands and a pretty solid live music experience. This is our journal of Day One held at the famous HiTone, located in the trendy, up-and-coming creative space of Crosstown here in Memphis, TN.

#901Spotlight on Stu Stu Studio: Josh Stevens
If you are in Memphis Music, you have probably heard of Josh Stevens. He has been in more bands than most Memphians can name, and is always in the background trying to make the music scene better and more accessible to everyone. I met him at the infamous Buccaneer a few years back, when he played with Indeed We Digress. After that brief encounter, I had a professional falling out with one of our mutual friends, and Josh showed his true colors being there to try and smooth that out. Unlike most people in this industry, he still has a heart. He gives a shit. That is rare. He may sport green hair, have piercings, and his “work attire” is some merchandise from an up-and-coming band, but once you sit down and get him talking, you see quickly he is an innovator.

An Open Letter from an Agent
Being an agent in the music industry is one of the most difficult jobs. You are a behind the scenes cog in the machine, and your entire position is directly correlated with the success of your clients. You will also be overlooked when they hand out the “Thank You” at the pinnacle of their career, and acceptance speeches should they get that far.

#901Spotlight HotKey Studios: Blake Heimbach
Heimbach, who was one of the original creative inhabitants of Young Avenue Sound with us as we opened up shop, is another one of the ambitious, young professionals we have grown sharing space with. His portfolio contains some of the biggest acts out of Memphis, including YoGotti, Tori WhoDat, and Grace Askew, but his passion for the business and Memphis Music community has led him to want to do something more altruistic. We love the ones who are invested in improving the overall tendency of local artists to succeed.

The 25 Best Genre Crossover Covers
Every once in a while, an artist covers a song and they prove their versatility and expertise in those three or so minutes. They take everyone by surprise and sometimes, dare I say, overshadow the originals. This is a collection of songs that we think cross genres and peak expectations.

The Ghost of Jim Morrison
The year is 1974. Capital Records releases a single "Black Magic, White Magic" along with liner notes stating the band consists of Drummer X, Bassist Y, and Keyboardist Z, with vocals and music written by “The Phantom.” This album would soon cause a whirlwind of conspiracy theories which still circulate today. The album, Phantom’s Divine Comedy Pt 1 was released three years after the passing of Jim Morrison, although the music and vocals sounded so much like The Doors, it gives one chills. Jim Morrison died under mysterious circumstances, at the age of 27, of a heroin overdose in Le Marais, Paris. An autopsy was never conducted, causing the speculation of his death being a hoax to spread among his fans like a wild fire.

#901Spotlight on Musician and Industry Mover, Cody Landers
Twenty-three-year-old Cody Landers has made a name for himself in the Memphis Music community at a very young age. He is guitarist for One Less Reason, and recently became bassist for What We Do In Secret. On top of his hectic career as a musician, he runs AeroLith production studio out of Young Avenue Sound in Memphis, TN. Unlike most 20-somethings, he works diligently, and has only recently seen some fruits of that labor.
