If you find yourself in the Wairarapa in January treat yourself to an outing that will indulge the senses. Located on the outskirts of Carterton, Lavender Abbey is part of a seven-acre lifestyle property belonging to Stuart and Jan Abernethy. They started the plantation after they moved to the Wairarapa in 2008 and fell in love with lavender and its huge range of uses. They have over 2,000 plants and lavender cultivation starts in Spring (September in New Zealand) and finishes in February with an annual crop of around 700kg of flowers. These are made into essential oil (that they have won awards for) and they then use the oil in a range of their own handcrafted products from soap, lotions and creams to wood polish.
Why Being Strong Is a Lie

I told her I’m really good at faking how well I’m coping, but that I’m getting tired, that I’m losing my fight, my resilience. That old saying, ‘that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is bullshit. It might at first, but after a while it starts to wear you down until eventually you wish it would.
Easy Christmas Jar
One of my favourite things about Christmas is doing crafts. I love making my own decorations and gifts, and have been doing so ever since I was a child. Unfortunately, the older I get the less time I seem to have and my Christmas crafts have become less elaborate and more time-savvy.
The Path to Lasting Happiness
Happiness is overrated. After all, the leading cause of unhappiness is the very pursuit of happiness itself! I mean, what is happiness anyway? Are you pursuing what society defines happiness is, or are you pursuing what it means to you?
Alone at Christmas
Am I strange for looking forward to spending Christmas alone this year? As a single, never-married, childless woman over 40 with no nearby family, this time of year should be filling me with dread, and it would be, if I wasn’t getting to spend it alone.
