Alive by Midnight Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Friday, February 8th Isaac ------- Isaac didn’t own a car. After missing his shot with the girl who might as well have owned his heart, he stood nearly confused as to why he was even in the student parking lot, to begin with. He wish he owned a car but he knew that wasn’t going to change anything, and it didn't. Isaac continued on his way, getting back to the school. Normally he would catch a ride with Mason, they'd probably go hangout a little bit before heading home, but not today. Mason had other plans today, so Isaac started walking. He headed towards the front of the school.

The Butcher on the Corner
Thunder crashed all over the city. Cracking its whip like a cruel master over men. One by one, the lights went out as people locked up their shops and tried falling asleep to the pitter-patter of the heavy rain. Only a few souls, seldom as they seem wandered around the streets at such an hour. Such souls tend to have little to go home to, or maybe something pulling them, an obligation of sorts, out in dreary conditions. Whatever their reason, whatever opinions they held on the matter, it never changed the fact that they had to wander out in a score of rain and thunderous clamor.

Flames Out By Midnight
With the nearby storm booming across the city, Sir William Bellows assembles his belongings. The great adventurer was waiting for a moment like this for him to truly explore the biggest mystery of his lifetime. He stopped to admire his collection of trophy heads hung high on his mantle. They ranged in size, from the Golden Maize Mouse of southern Burmalin to the humongous Green Eared Jackorat. Each one has its own story that William will never forget. Every one of his many adventures lies as a story he is eager to retell as many times as needed. Taking a swig of his remaining whiskey, scrunched his face and burned his throat.

Dead by Midday
Kayla ——— A rhythmic metronome of thumpy footsteps could be heard halfway down the hall. The girls failed to notice until it was too late. Some faster than others. Notepad in hand, whistle bouncing off of her chest, and completely aware that her girls weren't in lines doing their stretches like they needed to be doing. After reaching the gym, Coach Lauren's footsteps rang throughout the gymnasium.

Gone by daylight
Mason ______ The dank skunky smell that emitted from the rust-colored pickup truck could make anyone's nose wrinkle. In the distance the girls cheer team was practicing on the nearby football field, Mason could hear the coach blowing up her whistle. He tried his best to keep his eyes open but he gave in to the drowsiness. A few minutes couldn't hurt. The rhythmic cheering in the distance lulled him asleep as he laid down in his truck.

Dead by Daybreak
Isaac ____ The bell rings waking Isaac up from his sixth-period nap, or math nap as he likes to call it. He’s not particularly interested in the subject so it’s not a difficult task to fall asleep. It’s even easier when most of the period is taken up with a less than exciting test. Secretly wiping the drool from his chin as to hopefully not gross out anyone. Scanning the whiteboard, Isaac looked for any new notes worth remembering by Monday. Finally, he double-checked all of his belongings; phone, notebooks, bag, pencil, calculator. Isaac's plans this weekend outshone his focus, but he knew he only had to get through one more forty-five minute class before he could start to celebrate.

Day by daybreak
Samantha _______ The bell rings and Mrs. Clancy’s physics class stands up almost like drones. Immediately the students are excited about their weekend and start a commotion. Samantha hurried like everyone else, except she wasn’t as elated as the rest. Throwing her bag over her shoulder, Samantha followed the crowd into the hallway. Students, packed like sardines, filled the hallways moving to one exit or another.

There's No Rest for the Tired
Staggering down the stairs, one foot in front of the other. My eyes drifted back to sleep. Everything is telling me to close my eyes and rest but I know better or at least I pretend to. It's the same routine every day. One article of clothing at a time, piece by piece, forcing my senses awake with the chill of the living room then lulling them back to sleep with the warmth of my clothes. Securing my place on the couch for another ten minutes before I had to absolutely leave.

Early Morning and Waning Senses
Blaring, ringing, almost a sudden deafening, the alarm went off. It was time to leave. With a sigh that slowly left my lungs, I stumbled to get up. Sliding my tennis shoes on, the cold started to settle around me. Maybe I should put on more layers. It’s too late, oh well. Prepping myself to walk outside in the freezing temperatures, I take my time while also being diligent. There’s no reason to rush but I can’t risk it, the consequences would be immeasurable. So, I grab my keys and I grab the doorknob. Creaking open, the cold winds of early February rush inside nipping at what skin is showing and kissing and the skin that isn’t.

The Tiniest Pool of Lava
I soak my skin in the boiling water that will surely burn away the excess dirt from my skin. The lava-like liquid that engulfs my sense of touch in a tingling sensation paints my skin a bright red hue. My small tiny frozen toes burn as I dip them in seemingly one by one. Next is my ankles with nothing but skin and bone to submerge ever slowly. Every little shock of my nerves sends a burning feeling to my brain. Little by little I continue. If only my lobster skin could tell more than the fresh scar that is evidently left behind. It feels surreal.

The Wind Chills of Change
Creeping my eyes open, my mind fills with shades of warm yellows and oranges. My vision fills with cool dark colors of blues and blacks. The blankets wrap around my body, hugging me throughout the night. The buzzing from the street light outside keeps my mind running, even while the sun starts to rise over the treetops. The congested heavy breathing coming from next to me in bed slowly but surely moves to snoring by the end of the hour.

Tiny Teddy Bears
With a bright smile situated in between two round cheeks, a button nose the size of an almond, and big round eyes full of innocence. Chubby fingers that squish and stretch while squeezing mine. A silver bell of a giggle rang cheerily through my head, the kind of sound that could only put a smile on someone’s face. What a beautiful soul, so sweet and so innocent. A smile that could win any bad-tempered person calm. Hair so soft, and eyes so kind, the tiniest glance could steal any self-proclaimed ice-cold heart.
