Mason
______
The dank skunky smell that emitted from the rust-colored pickup truck could make anyone's nose wrinkle. In the distance the girls cheer team was practicing on the nearby football field, Mason could hear the coach blowing up her whistle. He tried his best to keep his eyes open but he gave in to the drowsiness. A few minutes couldn't hurt. The rhythmic cheering in the distance lulled him asleep as he laid down in his truck.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Mason sprung up to the sound of Kayla knocking on his window. Who knows how much time had passed. Mason scruffed up his hair to hopefully make it look nicer on such sudden notice. Upon realizing who was at his waking him up, Mason fumbled his way to the button to lower the window.
“Hey, time to wake up!” Her dark walnut skin was as flawless as ever, and even waking up her boyfriend before class started wasn’t going to change that. Mason smiled his normal goofy grin while rubbing the sleep from his eyes. If only Kayla knew how much he loved it when she woke him up. He feels like it's being woken up by an angel.
“Excuse me, ma’am, I’m busy here as you can see.” He gave her one of his signature goofy smiles. Kayla responded with an eye roll and a smirk, making her way back to the locker rooms. Mason sat mesmerized by her sway as she skipped on her way. Shaking himself out of his trance he remembered he had a few dates in the hallway, so he gathered his things. He eventually stumbled out, making sure to lock up.
Mason nearly tripped over his own feet while making his way back inside the main building. The large heavy metal doors with faded worn purple paint were always cracked open during school hours, and only the kids who dabbled in skipping class knew about it. Gliding down the hallway walls past the music rooms, one by one, Mason hung around here enough to make his way back to the main hallway. Finally, he was waiting right outside of the girl's locker room doors that lead into the main hallway. One by one the girls spilled out until she arrived.
“So I was just thinking you’d like to come hang out with moi this weekend. We can do anything you’d like, the movies, dinner, Netflix at my house, anything.” Mason wrapped his arm around Kayla’s shoulder, making her nearly jump out of her skin. Giving her a kiss on the top of her head, he walked her down the hallway to their next destination.
“I told you not to do that, you’ll get punched in the face one of these days.” Kayla tried to hold back her smile but still failed, leaning into Mason’s chest. “Well, we could go to dinner or something. I also heard there’s going to be a party tonight at Amber B.’s tonight.” She giggled before pausing, hoping he’d maybe give her some feedback.
"Dude, I was just thinking about that. Isaac was wanting to go too, I can let him know we're going. You and I can go together though, have a little preparty fun and maybe a little after-party fun." Mason got sneakily close to Kayla's ear when he whispered his proposition. Kayla started blushing almost instantly after his breath brushed up against her ear. The smell that lingered around him was intoxicating at the very least, and Kayla knew that he knew that.
"Then I'll see you at nine o'clock then, mon amour." Kayla turned around once they landed at the crossroads of the conjoining hallways. Leaning in she gave mason a quick kiss and winked as she turned away from him, slipping into the sea of peers.
Mason lingered on the kiss for a second afterwards, smiling he put his up as to wave to his angel floating away.
