The Cabin In the Woods
The Cabin in the Woods By John Matthews The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was a dark cold snowy night in Michigan with temperatures below 40 degrees. A group of young teenagers, two young boys named Ray and Jason, along with a girl named Tina were out hiking. It was getting late and the teens needed to head back home. Then they saw the cabin all alone at top of hill with a light coming from it. The teens slowly climbed the hill with much exhaustion. Rob the oldest decided to knock on the door. He banged on the door with loud knocks that shook the house. There was dead silence. Tina said “maybe, we should leave it’s getting late.” Rob attempted again by knocking on the door and again there was silence. Tina, said “come on let’s go home. No one is here.” Rob then for third time banged really hard the icicles from the tree branches began to fall from the lonely Oak tree nearby. Finally, the door creaked opened slowly and standing in the doorway was a small petite woman who was hunched over with a cane. She had wrinkles rough as sandpaper squashed together and a large mole on her right cheek. The lady looked to be in her late 80’s or 90’s and was wearing a dark gray cloak and torn black sandals. She smiled, and said “Come in children.”

A 2022 New Year’s Resolution
The clocks right and left hand landed on the number 12 as a new day and year started January 1, 2022. It didn’t feel much like a new year as I fell asleep on my lounge chair and was awaked with a tap on the shoulder from my wife saying “Happy New Year”. We both were going to attend a New Year’s Eve Party but the hosts got sick. My wife sat and watched the ball drop. I was asleep and mind drifted to thoughts of what would be my New Year’s Resolution. Then the light bulb came on and said what if I could be more generous and kinder this year. The world is full of injustice and unkindness. I thought why not try to impact society by doing more good deeds this year. I live in the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia) Sometimes it does not feel as if there is any love here with all this violence and hatred amongst one another. I thought why not bring some positivity to this city instead of all the negativity. I decided to take on this task and create ways to help impact my community by becoming involved and immersed in this diverse City of Brotherly Love.

What I Love Most About Philadelphia?
What do you love most about living in Philadelphia? By John Matthews Last year, a woman whose acquaintance I made at a conference in Chicago was in Philadelphia on business for the first time and called me to see if I would take her and some friends for a tour of the city. Born and raised in New York City, she really didn't know much about Philadelphia, except that the Phillies beat out her beloved Mets for a chance to play in the World Series, only to lose to her city's Yankees. I remember her asking me what it was like to be born and raise in a small town. After reminding her that Philadelphia is in fact the fifth-mostpopulous city in the United States, I politely pointed out that my city is a wonderful major world metropolis with a small town feeling. Philadelphia, popularly known to fellow Philadelphians as a "City of Neighborhoods," is what I love most about our city. Its diversity serves as a reminder that all are created equal, which says a lot about the city where our great American democracy was conceived.

Three Little Penguins Mumbles, Harvey, and Pierre have just finish celebrating Christmas at their Aunt Mimi house in Boynton, Beach, Florida and were wondering what they do for the New Year. They decided to go up North and visit Aunt Marie, in Philadelphia. Mumbles told them about the famous New Year’s Eve Parade with the Mummers. Harvey and Pierre lived in Florida and never seen the Mummers or traveled to Philadelphia. Mumbles told them about the Fancy costumes, String Bands, and dances they performed in center city. It would be a unique experience for Harvey, and Pierre to see for the first time. The Three Little Penguins told Aunt Mimi that they wanted go to Philadelphia and experience this tradition. Aunt Mimi contacted Aunt Marie and made the arrangements for Harvey, Mumbles, and Pierre to travel to celebrate the New Year holiday up North. The penguins were excited and couldn’t wait to arrive and see all this for themselves. They each went to their room to get some sleep before traveling the next day to the Airport for their new adventure.
