Bringing Imagination to Life.
Step (1) of a great work of art: the Concept. Imagery comes to life! One of my favorite pieces of art is not one that I created. Rather, it is a small piece drawn in pen and ink by my late grandad. It holds a picture of a mother goose protecting her little gosling. I am drawn to this piece because it demonstrates unusual detail from his artwork. Grandad was the advertising artist of the family, and loved expressing his views of people, vacations, and town happenings through caricature. In my mid-thirties, I have chosen to develop my own artistic talent. I enjoy drawing people’s faces, not because I am particularly good at it, but because it reminds me of a moment in time and teaches me to keep dreaming. My favorite pieces capture unique expressions, those that grab a reaction that might happen only once. For me this differs from a photo because I can incorporate my own perspective from a face. In personality, I am a think-outside-the-box type person. If there is something that I have not done before, I want to try it. This is more difficult for me when it comes to art. There are moments when I follow inspiration and try new things, but mostly I incorporate black and white pencil sketches, with some color thrown in occasionally for good measure.

I Promised.
The snow tumbles across the barren landscape, the last fruitless efforts to keep everyone indoors, except for one dark figure. A man stands alone. His motions are hazy, like the snow, as if they came from another person. They take monumental effort. He does his best to concentrate.

Sugar and Spice.
I’ve got this. How hard can it be, after all? It’s not like having my boss’s instructions to teach this little gremlin how to cook will in any way impact my job. But it really does, right? Sally is too busy to spend hours in the kitchen with her daughter, but she thinks that passing the job off to me, since I am getting paid anyway, will be a good idea. “It’s like working from home,” she told me yesterday. If only. One look at this surly kid makes me think twice. If her eyes could shoot mud on my newly purchased clothes, I’m sure they would. But, I’m getting paid, so this is my job for the day, even if working with a teen is ten times harder than my day job. I’ll start with the basics. “First, you mix all your dry ingredients.”

Pirate Points and Dashed Dreams
Does it feel sometimes like you're just sailing through life? You know that restless urge to do something, whatever it is, just so that you don't have that all at sea feeling in your gut? There is constantly so much hullabaloo around, whether it is the phones, the coworkers, the projects, the distractions, my mind all at sea. No matter how much you research what it means to meditate, to make your life shipshape, it seems like life just pushes straight past you and leads in a different direction. Like a broken compass. This work is essential. It is the mast that holds up my sail, that will get me to where I need to be. But you are by and large feeling like you're stuck in high and dry, wanting to stop and breath in the salty air, to paddle in the untame sea. Yet what happens? The shrieking eels come all too quickly and you become a rat trying to desert a sinking ship.

Character Sketches: The Hunger Games
If you recognized the banner photo at the top of this blog post, you might have guessed that I will be looking over The Hunger Games, by Susanne Collins. The following sketches include some extra strokes and are more down to earth, as the first of these movies and books are more of a shock to the system; something that people were not expecting. Though these are just a few of the vivid characters that Susanne Collins, the author of the trilogy, created, I chose some of my favorites and explain why. I did use versions of the movie-based characters, as I appreciate the effort that was taken in creating characters largely based on the concept that Collins created in her books.

#currentlyreading
One of my new favorite books (for this week, anyway) is this little 140ish-page book by Austin Kleon called, Steal Like an Artist. I borrowed this book from my sister, who is an entrepreneur in all things delicious! It ranges from catchy quotes to truth-filled deadpans. Additionally, it has journal-like sketches and doodles throughout, which are right up my alley when it comes to remembering several bits of information.
