You are sitting in the café with your friend, whom you have not seen for a while as your busy life schedules take its toll. You have been looking forward to catching up with each other, and you finally managed to arrange a coffee date. As you sit down, taking off your coat, you place your phone on the table and consider your coffee options. You carry on chatting to your friend and think nothing more of it. Of course, why should you think more about it? Recently, this happened to me, except over coffee it was over a pint and it was not left unnoticed. My friend pointed out to me that he had read an article that we are unconsciously leaving our phones visibly in front of us. I looked at my phone and suddenly realised I always leave my phone visibly on the table. I quickly took my phone and put it in my bag, out of sight.
I Got Rid of My Smartphone...
Digitally distracted. Those were the words that made me take the plunge and swap out the extension of my body that was my iPhone for a less-abled, less sexy, less functional "dumbphone."

I'm sure there's about a million articles on the endless battle between Android phones and iPhones. Especially with the brand new phones that came out recently. But before I go into it, here's a little bit of a background.

If you didn't think about any of the things to consider before buying a smartphone, you may run into major problems down the line. Apple products are great, but just like any tech company, they are not without their quirks and occasional issues. While Apple has a relatively convenient system in place for you to get repairs or replacements in person at Apple stores, plenty of small software troubles can be taken care of without having to resort to your warranty. Before contacting Apple, check out these simple iPhone fixes. Your issue may be easier to fix than you think!

This week I decided to update my mobile phone. I never buy anything without doing my research first. I may be a silver surfer, but I'm certainly no techno-phobe and I wanted a smart phone which would serve both my personal and business needs, with a few added extras. A better camera would be a bonus, as would a decent sound output so I could listen to music on the go. Work-wise, I wanted quick and easy access to my contacts by text, email, and social media. Security measures such as fingerprint and facial recognition would be cool, but not on my list of essentials.

In this day and age, everyone has some sort of mobile technology; whether it’s a phone, an iPod, e-reader, or laptop, most people have at least one. Adults aren’t always as technologically dependent as we “youngsters” are. The other day I was trying to teach my grandpa how to answer a text on his flip phone, and after about an hour he goes, “I fought in Vietnam and had to disable bombs, yet that is easier than learning how to text.” That got me, your average 20-year-old who probably can send ten texts a minute, thinking. Why is it that the older generations can live without technology, yet my peers and I can’t even put our phones down long enough to make our beds in the morning? I mean, you’d think that the older generations would want to get their hands on this new technology more than we do since they grew up without it. Yet, I’ve found that most of them would be just as happy to carry on as if technology never existed.
2018 Without a Phone?! Do-Able or Disaster?
Wow! No "clickbait" here. Honestly, it's so sad to even think that one day this would be a "crisis." Like, yes, the title is true. I have been living without my phone for about a month & a half now.
The Advancements of Technology
Welcome to the 21st Century, where almost everybody owns or have owned at least one digital device, whether it is a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop, a desktop, an e-reader, a digital camera, a smart TV, or anything else that they have come up with in the last 10 minutes that I have not caught wind of yet. With the rate that Apple pops out with their plethora of idevices, it really would not shock me too much if I missed out on the premier of something new while sitting here typing my little heart away. Smartphone technology is still relatively in its toddler stages and already has dominated the industry. It is rare, although not unheard of, to see someone with a basic cellular telephone or without a cellular device at all for that matter. I was driving home the other day I and ended up behind a school bus in the midst of unloading its passengers. I watched the expressions on their faces as they walked along the sidewalk smiling down at their smartphones… wait, WHAT?! Every single one of these kids were sporting iPhones and other types of hundred dollar mobile devices right along with their Hello Kitty and Transformers backpacks. I couldn’t help but to think about how different things were back when I was growing up. After Christmas break, you may have seen a kid or two on the bus with a new Sony Discman or a Gameboy Advance but other than that we did things that I seldom see young people do, such as talk to each other or read a book.

At the darkest time of the year I chose to take a break from wifi in my home. Having this time and space allowed me the opportunity for reflection on an aspect of my life that I was feeling the need to assess. I was feeling the pull to examine how my relationship with technology and social media has evolved, or rather, has regressed.

Will somebody please tell me something? What in the world is wrong with some people? When I was a lad no bigger than a banana, they had this extraordinary device called a telephone at home. It was nice and, like me, it only came in black. As I grew older (and maybe dumber), I discovered that these devices were also outside scattered around in various neighborhoods. The difference is that you needed a coin (10 cents) to operate them. And, like home, you had the added luxury called privacy. At home, if you were alone, no one else could hear your conversation. Outside, all you had to do is step into the phone booth, close the door behind you, drop your dime into the device, dial the number and chat away. It (and life) was that easy.
Maurice BernierPublished 6 years ago in 01Britain, a Nation of Mobile Phone Fiddlers
Britain, and I dare say the rest of the world, has become a nation of mobile phone fiddlers—official! And if the vast numbers of polycarbonate rectangles that appear every time someone gets on a bus are any guide, I'd say the habit has spread at an alarming rate. Not quite pandemic, but not far from it. Don't misunderstand me, I'm probably as guilty as anyone. And I'm definitely not hurling slings and arrows at mobile phones.
