An Open Letter to Roseanne Barr
Dear Roseanne, The new season of The Conners has spurred me to write to you. I've been so upset with you ever since the reboot of your self-titled show. You see, I grew up with you as a secondary mother. Your television family was a reflection of my family, and your parenting lessons echoed my mother's. You were the first feminist woman I saw blazing a path with no regard to those she upset. You were revolutionary to girls of my age.
Diane NivensPublished 5 years ago in Viva Why Ariana Grande is Changing the Status Quo of Women and Mental Health
Ariana Grande recently released her new album, Sweetener, and just announced her US Tour dates for the Sweetener World Tour. Her career is skyrocketing right now and she deserves to be recognized beyond the mere fact that her and Pete Davidson have split. She’s silently advocating for a positive mental state of mind and honing in on her womanhood, all while being independent working on getting better.
Mackenzie CoberleyPublished 6 years ago in VivaJean Harlow
These days, when people think of a "Bombshell," they immediately think of Marilyn Monroe, or the recent Netflix documentary about Hedy Lamarr. However, we're focusing on the blondes. And while Marilyn is equally talented and gorgeous, she had a blonde bombshell predecessor... Her name was Jean Harlow.
The Future of Willow Creek?
Most people who consider themselves part of the church community are already aware of the allegations against Willow Creek's former teaching pastor, Bill Hybels. However, the publicity of these accusations has spread far beyond the megachurch. Through media, the #MeToo movement was a major power player in reviving what the church tried to bury nearly eight years back... but what does any of this have to do with Reverend Steve Carter's sudden resignation?
Are Celebrity Deaths Presented Differently in the Media According to Gender?
My piece will investigate how the media—specifically the style of newspaper typically referred to as a ‘broadsheet’—portrays celebrities after their deaths and whether or not their gender affects the lexis used. Throughout this piece I will be analysing obituaries about four celebrities who have passed away fairly recently, two of them male and two of them female. I will then compare the lexis used between each, making reference to and providing evidence for any similarities and differences found.

One of my earliest memories is watching tv with my grandma, who I used to call Tata. In Spain late 1990s, my little household's tv repertoire consisted of whatever was available in the small variety of channels we had at the time. I remember watching El Chavo del 8, a Mexican sitcom from the 70s that they show and my grandparents put on tv because it was what they were showing at the time. I also remember Lina Morgan, a Spanish actress, and the old films they show most afternoons. You see, quirky characters filled my then developing brain, and my love for comedy began.
Andrea de LeraPublished 6 years ago in VivaBest Feminist Quotes by Emma Watson
I’m a diehard Emma Watson fan ever since she starred in the Harry Potter film franchise as Hermione Granger, who was voted the best female Hollywood character of all time. Not only is she a stunning model and actress, Emma is also a major feminist and activist who never puts her guard down when it comes to equal rights. She’s also been appointed as a UN Women Goodwill ambassador and helped the launched of UN Women campaign HeForShe, which calls for men to advocate gender equality.

This morning, news broke that actor Morgan Freeman was accused of inappropriate behavior by eight different women on films sets and interviews. There was one account by a production assistant that he lifted up her skirt and asked her if she was wearing underwear. This allegedly happened on the Going in Style set. Of course, after these allegations came to light, Freeman apologized.

Ode to a Time When Justice Looks Different, We Listen to Women and Survivors, and Blackness Is Not Used as a Means to Support Serial Rapists
All over social media, Cosby rape apologists are passionately decrying his conviction. It doesn’t seem to matter that he admitted to putting Quaaludes in the drinks of the 62 women he violated. He framed drugging the women in a cavalier manner because apparently everyone used to do ‘ludes in the 60s. You know, no big deal. He just forgot that really essential part of allowing the women to consent to drugs and sex before chemically rendering them immobile and unable to say yes or no. He even joked about slipping mickeys in women’s drinks in a 1969 comedy routine. He clearly felt an unquestioned entitlement to these women’s bodies. And somehow, the voices of 62 women are eclipsed to many by the perspectives of one powerful man who wanted to drug women and assault them, but not have any consequences for those actions.
Richard Wright, MAPublished 6 years ago in Viva When It's Too Hard
Role models are abundant. There are writers like J.K. Rowling who was rejected twelve times before becoming the author of one of the most popular series of books ever. There are actors like Robert Downey Jr. who overcame substance abuse and are now uber successful in his industry.
Maya ConroyPublished 6 years ago in VivaUpcoming Action Films with Female Leads
There was a time when women didn't lead superhero movies. That was before 2017 (sorry Elektra!). But when Wonder Woman crushed at the box office, studios began to add more and more action films with female leads to their rosters. Now some of the most anticipated films coming in the new two years have women top billed. Here's what you can look forward to in 2018 and beyond.
Ben KharakhPublished 6 years ago in Viva5 Powerful Women That Led Me to Confidence
Happy International Women's Day! I usually only make blog posts on Wednesdays (check out yesterday's post here!), but because today is a special occasion, I wanted to write about the women that have led me to confidence over the years. These women helped me get through specific times in my life, and I have so much respect for the values they have taught me.
