Fifty Millilitres of Everything . Winner in Already Here Challenge. Top Story - September 2026.
I'm on deck, coveralls on, waiting for a sample of seawater to be lifted onto deck, where I will then draw seawater into a syringe until it hits the fifty mark. I then push that syringe's worth of seawater through a filter capsule about the size of a torch, screw the cap shut, scribble some things on the cap with a Sharpie, and drop it into a sample bag (posh name for a sandwich bag). That's it. That's the entire collection process to be able to answer the quite literal million dollar question of "what's down there," or to know exactly what species are present in a particular area of the ocean. Something that would have sounded like science fiction to me a few years ago is rapidly becoming the everyday norm.

The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy. Top Story - September 2026.
The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy As I take the time to write this, I had just purchased this novel, The Wilderness by Angela Flournoy. It’s been over a year maybe two since I have read a novel and I’m looking forward to reading this one. I’ve had very little time with my 72-hour work weeks six days a week to fit in a novel, and when I do it’s a slow read. With what little time I have I’m focused on reading a writing poetry. I didn’t purchase it because it was a Kirkus Prize Finalist, in fact I’ve never heard of Angela before. I purchased this book because of what Angela said in an interview with Brad Listi on the Other People Podcast as follows:

Not Today. Top Story - September 2026.
Stopping in front of the store doors, Paige checked inside her purse. Her paranoia calmed once Paige saw that her wallet was still in her purse. She smiled slightly as she grabbed the door handle. Only for the smile to disappear once the thought appeared that her credit card was not in the wallet. Even though she knew that shouldn’t be the case, Paige sighed as she let go of the door and opened her wallet. She felt relieved yet annoyed at her anxiety when she saw that her credit card was exactly where it should be.

The Vacuum Has Locked Himself in the Bathroom to Cry Again. Winner in Already Here Challenge. Top Story - September 2026.
I was standing on a beach while Radika, a fantasy writer, tried to convince me that animals were people. You see, they’re writing a book about mermaids—people-fish—and I think they may have lost sight of the line where reality tips into fantasy. What they mean when they say animals are people, I think, is that they believe animals have souls. I argued that what makes people people is not the soul. But when I try to articulate what makes a human a human, I am left with some lame quip about opposable thumbs and taxes.

The Undertow. Top Story - September 2026.
I remember distinctly getting caught in the under tow when I was little. I want to say that I was around six years old and it was at the ocean. Growing up in CT we often got up early on saturday mornings and would all go off to one ocean or another. I had heard of the under tow, even my absent minded parents warned us like all other children were warned.

October's Grove. Top Story - September 2026.
Wandering through a vast blooming meadow Heat permeates my mind and dampens my skin When the sun starts to wane on the flowers of summer When light falls through branches in A lacy pattern of shadows I press on through the treeline, to find my long-lost kin

Bah Humbug. Top Story - September 2026.
“Claudia,” John poked his head into the back-of-house office. “There’s a bunny in the parking lot.” Claudia did not turn from her computer. “I think you need to come investigate this.” “John, if you can’t handle a bunny, I don’t think you’re GM material.” Claudia laughed. She had taken John under her wing to show him the ropes of running a busy mall at the holidays. He might be able to hack it at a Pac Sun, but he would never fit into her shoes. He never missed a beat on the coffee runs, though, so she kept him around. “I think we might need to call the police.” “On a fucking rabbit?” The mall would be open in a couple of hours, and Claudia knew various store managers would be slowly arriving. Whatever was up John’s ass, she didn’t want it trickling down into the workday. It was twelve days before Christmas: the final sprint to the holiday shopping season was upon them.

Supergirl Was Good Actually. Top Story - September 2026.
I am going to go on the record as a defender of Supergirl (2026). This may seem controversial. After all, people generally did not like Supergirl (2026) for reasons I have seen very poorly articulated, and most criticisms I’ve seen stem from the fact that it is not profitable. (I have seen one article speculating that generative AI was used for Lobo concept art, but this allegation is not confirmed.) So let me break down the parts of it I liked, and speculate in kind why I think this movie was so poorly received.

That welcoming, open posture and the warm, alluring smile... She stands tall in the center of the room, shoulders down, arms waving in the air, like a music-possessed orchestra director.

The Funnel of Your Being. Top Story - September 2026.
There’s nothing worse than a city with a black eye. Hey, you! Wake up! You might think this is all sweet. It ain’t all good. There’s no love, luck, and lollipops in these streets. You see that blood-stained ground? That’s the result of another slain Delawarean in these Wilmington streets. If you see dozens of candles burning all around, it’s not out of festivity, but celebration of a four-year-old caught in the crosshairs of rival gang violence.

Sluvercrum. Top Story - September 2026. Content Warning.
Before we start, I want you to do something for me. I just need you to say out loud, ‘Sluvercrum, you are nothing to me.’ That’s it, pretty simple. You can say it from wherever you are sitting or lying; no need to look in a mirror, unless you want to for dramatic effect.
