The Worst Thing About Being Human Is That We Get Used to Everything

The life you prayed for eventually becomes the life you complain about.

By mikePublished 2 months ago • 3 min read

There was a time when everything you have today felt impossible.

The job you now hate was once the opportunity you desperately wanted.

The apartment you barely notice was once your dream of independence.

The phone in your pocket would have amazed the younger version of you.

The friends you rarely text were once the people you couldn't wait to see.

The problem isn't that your life became worse.

The problem is that your mind adapted.

Human beings are incredibly good at getting used to things.

It's one of our greatest strengths.

And one of our greatest weaknesses.

We adapt to success.

We adapt to comfort.

We adapt to happiness.

Unfortunately...

We also adapt to pain.

Someone compliments you.

It feels amazing.

After hearing compliments every day, they barely affect you.

You buy something you've wanted for years.

For a week, you can't stop looking at it.

A month later, it's just another object.

You finally move into your dream home.

At first, every room feels magical.

A few years later, you walk through the front door without noticing it.

The extraordinary quietly becomes ordinary.

This doesn't only happen with possessions.

It happens with people.

Think about your parents.

There was a time when hearing their voice was part of every normal day.

One day...

It won't be.

Think about your closest friend.

One day, you'll laugh together for what turns out to be the last time.

Neither of you will know it.

Life rarely announces its final moments.

It simply lets them happen.

Then years later, memory gives them value.

It's strange.

We appreciate things the most after we've lost them.

Rarely while we still have them.

Imagine if someone told you that one person currently in your life would disappear forever exactly one year from today.

You wouldn't wait to call them.

You wouldn't ignore their messages because you were "too busy."

You wouldn't assume there would always be another weekend.

You'd notice everything.

The way they laugh.

The stories they repeat.

The sound of their voice.

Nothing about them would feel ordinary anymore.

But here's the uncomfortable truth.

You don't know who that person is.

None of us do.

That's why taking people for granted is one of the easiest mistakes to make.

We mistake familiarity for permanence.

We think because something exists today, it will exist tomorrow.

History has never supported that belief.

Everything changes.

Children become adults.

Parents grow old.

Friends move away.

Cities change.

Bodies age.

Dreams evolve.

Nothing escapes time.

And maybe that's exactly why life is beautiful.

If nothing ever changed, nothing would feel valuable.

Imagine watching a sunset that lasted forever.

Eventually, you'd stop looking.

Its beauty comes from the fact that it ends.

Life works the same way.

The temporary nature of everything is what gives everything meaning.

The coffee you drink with your father.

The random conversation with your sister.

The late-night drive with your best friend.

The walk home after work.

These moments don't become precious because they're extraordinary.

They become precious because they can never be repeated in exactly the same way again.

Every moment disappears the instant it arrives.

That's what makes it priceless.

Most people spend their lives chasing the next achievement.

The next paycheck.

The next vacation.

The next relationship.

The next version of themselves.

Meanwhile, today's life quietly becomes yesterday's memory.

One day, you'll wish you could relive an ordinary Tuesday.

Not because Tuesday was special.

Because someone who was there isn't anymore.

Because the version of you who lived that day no longer exists.

Because time kept moving while you were busy waiting for something better.

Don't misunderstand.

Ambition is beautiful.

Growth matters.

Dreams matter.

But don't become so obsessed with building tomorrow that you forget to experience today.

Success means very little if you're never present enough to enjoy it.

The cruelest trick time ever plays on us is this:

It lets us realize the value of something...

Only after we've stopped having it.

Don't wait for absence to teach you gratitude.

Notice what you have while it's still yours.

Because the worst thing about being human isn't that life is short.

It's that we get used to miracles so quickly that we stop seeing them.

Until one day...

They're gone.
