Before you start making videos willy-nilly on TikTok, just so you can "put your brand out there," please read this article!

TikTok is very different than other social media platforms with "shorts" (short videos), and you'll want to make sure you are creating high-quality, engaging content that fits in with the expectations of the audiences. You don't need to produce slick videos with fancy lighting and a lot of post-production editing.

You DO need to create videos that resonate with your audience.

First, Be Active on TikTok as a Viewer

You'll notice just how short the videos are when you use TikTok as a viewer. Some are just 4-6 seconds long! You don't have to create videos that are that short, but you will want to keep it to 15-25 seconds to start.

Notice that some of the videos are pretty raw: you'll see the human side of creators. Some are a hot mess, others are a spicy disaster. Some are sharing victories in life, others are crying in their car after being bullied in the grocery store.

Some videos are edutainment (educational, yet entertaining), and there are lots of ways to treat your channel with consistent videos like skits, role play, demonstrations, sharing stories, healing sent through your phone camera, and so much more.

See what others are creating and get a good feel for the ambiance of TikTok, and you'll understand how different it is than Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram. Read this article to gets tips on how to train the TikTok algorithm to know what you like and love.

Why Shorter Videos on TikTok are More Effective

Besides the obvious reason that people have a short attention span, it's important to get right to the point. Every generation has a different attention span, and that is due to psycho-sociological factors. But trust me, even the Baby Boomers and Generation X have shorter attention spans than you might think.

The algorithm puts highest priority to the number of seconds watched -- do the viewers watch it all the way through? Do viewers watch it over and over, looping the video because it's so interesting or funny, they want to see it again? Length of time watched is prioritized over number of views, comments, likes, shares, and favorites.

Keep it short and sweet! TikTok's format is designed for short-form videos, so it's important to keep your videos under 25 seconds. The shorter the better, as this ensures that viewers stay engaged and watch the entire video. Make sure your videos get straight to the point and are easy to understand.

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." Also, "inch by inch, it's a cinch." It's most effective on TikTok -- just like on a blog with a series of articles -- to compartmentalize the information. Read the article on Creating Edutainment Videos for a more detailed explanation of compartmentalizing info.

How to Incorporate More Info in Short Videos on TikTok

I get it. I know you have a lot to say! And you want to share it with the world! You want to educate, you want to inspire, you want to motivate your audience. This is great, but you absolutely have to meet them where they are.

Here are some ideas to get more info into the short videos, as well as be more effective in terms of getting viewership.

Use captions: Many TikTok users watch videos without sound, so it's essential to include captions in your videos. This ensures that your message is conveyed even if the viewer is not listening to the audio. It also lets the algorithm know more accurately what the video is about and can put it in front of your ideal audience.

Use music: TikTok's unique algorithm favors videos with popular songs and music, so it's a good idea to incorporate music into your videos. Make sure you choose songs that are popular and relevant to your target audience. Make sure, too, that it's appropriate depending on your topic. And, pay attention to the length of the music clip so it doesn't cut off awkwardly.

Keep it visual: TikTok is a visual platform, so it's important to create videos that are visually appealing. Use bright colors, interesting angles, and fun effects to grab viewers' attention and keep them engaged.

Be creative: TikTok users love creative and unique content. Try to think outside the box and come up with original ideas for your videos. This will help your videos stand out and attract more views and followers. Check out the CookTok side of the platform to see creators who exemplify this.

Creating short videos for TikTok requires a different approach than other social media platforms. Keep your videos short and visually appealing and use captions and music to enhance your content. With these tips, you can create TikTok videos that resonate with your target audience and attract more views and followers.
