You Stand With Me

Always there

Just a text or a phone call away,

You’re the first person I think of when I have something to say,

Twenty-eight years you’ve been there with me,

Although not always understanding the concept in which you stand,

My greatest achievement, my wonderful son.

**

You listen when I’m in need,

You reach out when you feel I’m trying to stand alone,

You wait patiently while I struggle to find my words,

Always there,

Always with love in your heart.

**

I dread the day I no longer see you every day,

Although I know it’s the natural order of it all,

And I’m aware that time is coming, racing towards us fast,

So I’m trying to make every minute count,

As I know you are too.

**

I am so very proud of the man you have become,

Your strength, your honesty knows no bounds,

You speak your truth, even when you know it won’t be well received,

Your intelligence, at times, blows my mind,

As you listen and learn of the world in which you live.

**

Your independence is one of your greatest achievements,

Happy in your solitude, a lesson you learnt at such a young age,

Belief in your ability to always overcome,

Holding onto your integrity in moments of adversity,

And I bow to your wisdom and empathy.

**

You are my pride and joy,

The one person that makes my heart swell when you call me Mum,

My strength, my greatest accomplishment,

You honour my life, my being,

Just by being your true authentic self — my love, my amazing son.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
