Woodland Adventure
Friend or foe?
Rocks and sticks roll hard beneath my bare feet,
Slippery and skittish, causing me to slide downhill too fast,
Landing hard enough to rattle my teeth.
Startled bright birds lift for gray branches and blue sky,
Cawing and screeching their alarm and complaints,
Something nearby rushes in the green undergrowth.
As I carefully rise, I hear running water,
Burbling and gurgling,
The backdrop to woodpeckers tapping and insects buzzing.
Stepping lightly, on my painfully dirty feet,
I follow the sound and scent of water,
Scanning carefully for things that slither and crawl.
Light bouncing off of a silvery stream,
Leads me to a soft sand edge to sigh and then kneel,
And rinse the taste of blood from my mouth, in cool water.
