Poem of Elephants Impact On Us
Side by side,
We travel far and wide.
Loyalty we have to each other,
Like others have to the queen mother.

Our gentleness draws many,
Like a coin collector to a unique penny.

Is it our mystical power?
That births a feeling of empower?
That beguiles the souls,
Searching for happiness goals?

What beholds,
Others into our folds?
Is it our earthy muddy perfume,
That you desire like a rose bloom?
***********
Alas, it must be our wrinkles, perhaps?
That look as dry as time worn maps.
Nay, it must be our charcoal gray,
That shimmers when we sway.
***********
For there is no fear,
When humans hear,
Our blaring melodies sing,
Like a trumpet playing for a king.
***********
Our tune can be soft,
As a kitty’s purr hiding in a loft.
Or loud and thunderous,
Ohhhh, its quite wondrous.
***********
Our massive presence,
Evokes nothing but patience.
***********
A trance will embrace you,
Like a silky cloak of royal blue.
At first glance,
You will be tempted to do a dance.
***********
We are the balm,
To weave you into calm.
A soul who searches,
For peace and wisdom in churches.
***********
Just have to believe,
Or take your leave.
We elephants can feed,
Your very soul of what you need.
***********
If good fortune is what you seek,
Let us be your talisman when you feel weak.
***********
Sprinkles of good luck,
When you are stuck.
Will seep in your heart,
Right from the start.
***********
Watch with hopeful eyes,
New beginnings are in the skies.
We Elephants are proud,
Our wisdom hovers like a strong cloud.

B. A. Durham’s False Memories blends dream and reality in a seamless mix. As his father, afflicted by Alzheimer’s, fades away, the narrator is haunted by a dream that may be a memory, returning to him insistently. The piece is full of wonderful detail (the father touching his lip where once there was a mustache, “but now he is clean-shaven—he has been for years” — and moving in revealing the complexities of a family’s life. A worthy winner which shows the power of dreams to influence us.
