Whispers of Wildness

A Gorilla's Perspective Poem

Well, what are you looking at?

We are the same as you

just dwelling in a natural habitat

gentle breezes with greenery as our view.

We are the same as you

enjoying fresh fruit, nuts and seeds

We even partake eating some steak while living at the zoo

although we prefer to have our fresh green weeds.

We are the same as you

we have a mother, father, brother and sister too,

generations that speak to each other, this is true

a smile, a grunt, and even caring for the minor boo-boo.

Protecting and providing for our own

we feed our babies from the breast

and nestle them with a soft caress

we feel the emotions of pain, joy, sadness and stress.

We are the same as you,

our mates at times can act like a shrew

lost in our actions, wondering what did we do?

Illness can touch me and mine

our quest for well-being is the goal

sadly lungs have paid a price

from pollution in the air on a whole.

You have destroyed the ozone layer

with the burning of too much coal

don’t pretend that you not a player

in this never-ending growth of the big large hole.

We are the same as you

if we feel the idle threats

the one that wronged us will get the clue

and our response will have no regrets.

Stand back, look into the reflections

we are no different, yet we have lost some connections?

We too can solve some riddles to perfection

but the way you solve problems has ventured down dangerous directions.

Cease your poisonous rage,

we may come from a common ancestor, we do not jest,

but how is it that we are living in a cage?

Even though you are full of protest?

We are prisoners of your control

you kill for pleasure, reward and the meat on our bones

our green lands are in your hands, what is your goal?

There is nothing left but the anguish sounds of moans.

You have taken, over and over again, destroying all in your way

raped the lands, butchered the homes of many

covered the earthy grounds with a blanket of black and gray.

Why not leave us some land? You have plenty?

You have lost your way,

we will be a casualty from your labors

take the time, and look at the decay!

All we ask is live like neighbors.

No!

We are just an object for your pleasure

keeping us hostage for display

a photo op at a zoo for your leisure

we wild animals feel so exposed, as spectators watch us play.

That is where we are different

we care for our own

you humans act indifferent

killing over beliefs, religion, cultures and the unknown.

So what are you looking at?

Get out of here, do you hear!

Because at the end of the day, you're just a brat!

We are not the same that is clear

for we will live in a forest of fear.

Begone, you thief of peaceful days,

for you are the painter of the earth's fiery blaze!

So powerful - amazing imagery. Well done.

  • Omg you have no idea how much I loved this! I can't wait for the day where animals take over. I wanna see them put humans in cages, destroy their houses, and everything else that humans do to animals!
