When Demons Tread on Angels’ Wings

Ponderings

“It is our right for which we’re born”

The zealots shout with guns held high

“It’s not the tool that caused the pain

It’s people, and we won’t comply”

*

Where tiny painted caskets lay

The sound of mournful church bells ring

As tears flood freshly broken ground

When demons tread on angels’ wings

*

When healthcare only matters for

Those among us who can afford

Millions suffer death and disease

That on the whole remains ignored

*

Through drought and famine years on end

No water flows in once fertile springs

The starving child a casualty

Of demons treading on angels’ wings

*

When power is a drug addiction

Control an aphrodisiac

A ruthless tyrant starts a war

With full approval of his claque

*

Thousands die, a land destroyed

The shells and bombings soon begin

There’s no concern for life or loss

When demons tread on angels’ wings

*

“Keep them far from our sacred shores

They’re not like us. They don’t belong”

Burning torches smoke black as their hearts

They chant a xenophobic song

*

The flag they carry, long disgraced

The racist, hateful shit they fling

Meant to divide, demean, suppress

As demons tread on angels’ wings

*

Why oh why, dear humanity

Must we always be this way?

Will we ever come together

For betterment and brighter days?

*

I have no answer, but wish I knew

Some magic solution that I could bring

That works for all and ends forever

The demons' tread on angels’ wings

Your poem ticked all the circles and pulled all my heartstrings. It is hard to believe where we are right now as a nation and a world.. Your lamentation must not go unheeded.
