We Come From Heights

No Exceptions

That irrepressible urge to climb up something

Limbs fueled

by unending waves of muscle fibers

firing in all directions

A fixed childhood message on a repetitive loop

to adult selves

about heights

and healing

and where we belong

extension of grasp

breadth

limitless expansion

and how phenomenal our anatomy feels without restrictions

undeterred by disapproving looks

dirt on clothes

occasional cuts and bruises

Those sky-bound places are the closest feeling to home

that called the minute we stepped out the door

for monkey bars and magnificence

We have gaps to close

goals to reach

stars to find

and Ancestors who cannot wait

to whisper secrets in our ears

We just need

to get close enough
