My dearest love, my heart’s desire

I write to you from fields of fire

Where muskets roar and cannons boom

And every day is filled with gloom

These days are dark, and wet, and cold

And death is always near, I’m told

Yet through it all, my thoughts of you

Give me strength to see this through

I miss your kiss and warm embrace

And the way a smile lights up your face

But, for now, my heart finds peace

In cherished thoughts and memories

My brothers here, they stand in faith

That soon this war will run its race

For in our hearts, we know it well

The end will come, and peace prevail

The sun will set upon this war

And peace and love will soon restore

Our homes and lives and families —

A future that was meant to be

Until that day, my dearest love

Please keep me close, and pray above

For in your heart, I find my strength

And hope to carry me the length

But should I answer heaven’s bugle call

And on these blood-stained fields I fall

Weep not for me with heavy heart

Our love not even death can part

Should I befall a soldier’s fate
