Time Out

A short break is all he asks

The breeze blows away the cobwebs weaved around his motivation,

Stagnant waters that run too deep,

He places one foot forward, contemplating one day at a time,

Knowing anything more and his mind paralyses, causing his heart to weep.

**

Grief shatters his equilibrium, toppling his momentum,

His heart beating bloody and raw,

The loss has crippled his everyday routine,

And his emotional stagnation refuses to thaw.

**

He cries his nightmares while the sky is dark,

Not that you’d know from his daytime smile,

Courage shelters him from callous eyes,

And that precious compassion of his will beguile.

**

While his heart bleeds he’s at his most vulnerable,

An excuse trampled upon by those who cast hate,

He finds he’s swallowed by the thought of living in pain,

His shoulders broad but struggling with the weight.

**

The tears rinse his pretence from the daylight hours,

Leaving him open to the knowledge that loss has taught,

An education he’d tried to stall for another day,

Because it’s left him destroyed and overly fraught.

**

To love so deeply casts death into the height of his trauma,

Thankful for the time he had but now devastated beyond belief,

To see his smile without the shine in his eyes,

Announces the sorrow in which there is no relief.

**

He trusts tomorrow will wrap him in situational security,

Warding his back while he crumbles in his solitude,

Deserving a timeout to regather his equilibrium,

A change in pace to recalibrate his current mood.

**

Please give him the time he requests without reaction,

He’ll be back on his feet in a day or too,

His fortified courage worn within his smile,

Softly expanded upon his emotional rescue.

**

He’ll honour your kindness with unending gratitude,

Delivering his strength to the fore,

He’ll stand tall with grace after dealing with the heartbreak,

And come back to the living, stronger than ever before.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

You take as much time as you need, Colleen. After Holy Week, we clergy need a timeout, too
