The Other Side

The disadvantaged side of town

I have seen you in your fancy mansion

On the deck, where you watch the sun go down,

Remember there are others who see it too

Over on the other, wrong side of town.

***

The side where the homeless and sick lay

Where the drop-outs and druggies are,

Where there is always a fight brewing

And we all drive a souped-up car.

***

Over here life is ruled by the ruthless

We find out that hope is seldom there,

We get drunk and high on a daily basis

And most of us could not care.

***

Young and skinny street kids roam the alleys

Their ‘good for nothing’ parents kicked them out,

They can only eat if they rob a grocery store

But then they earn the label of being a lout.

***

But aside from all that, I too watch the sunsets

I still take the time to write, read and dream,

Look under the surface and see we are human

Notice that things aren’t always what they seem.

***

So while you’re sitting over there on your deck

Relaxing and watching the sun go down,

Remember me as I will be watching too

From over here, the other side of town.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
