Yellow
My Children's Lullaby
Because I'm currently bawling my eyes out over my oldest child's Kindergarten graduation rapidly approaching, I thought I would turn it into something beautiful.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for this song. Someone I loved very much showed me it. It was always my eldest's lullaby when he was a baby.
Then it turned into my daughter's lullaby.
Now, I sing it to my baby.
I'm just sobbing tonight over how beautiful all three of my children are to me.
My daughter requested a lullaby tonight from one of her TV shows called Chip and Potato, and because I didn't know the words to that one, I sang her this.
Listen to the words.....
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah, they were all yellow
I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called Yellow
So then I took my turn
Oh, what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow
Your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so
I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh, what a thing to do
'Cause you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh, what a thing to do
And it was all yellow
And your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know, for you, I'd bleed myself dry
For you, I'd bleed myself dry
It's true
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do
My partner thinks it's about someone that died but honestly I think it suits our family. My grandma used to sing us One Tin Solider growing up.
Listen children to a story
That was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley both below.
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone
And the valley people swore they would have it for their very own.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, you can justify in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing come the judgement day.
On the bloody morning after,
One tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill.
Asking for the buried treasure.
Tons of gold for which they'd kill
Came an answer from the kingdom
With our brothers we will share all the
Secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there.
Now the valley cried with anger
Mount your horses, draw your sword
And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure, on the mountain dark and red
Teared the stone and looked beneath it
Peace on earth was all it said
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, you could justify in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing come the judgement day
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, you could justify in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away
It seems to be a trend to sing our babies songs that aren’t typically known for being lullabies.
What about you guys? What do you or did you sing to your children? Or what was your favourite lullaby that was sung to you while you were little? Something classic like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or something our there like the ones I’ve written about above?

Wow loved this! Love this song too
Yellow is a pretty song very sweet narrative here!
Congratulations 🎉 on top story.
Chloe, this is a beautiful lullaby! The repetition and simple lyrics make it easy to sing and calming for little ones. "And it was all yellow" creates a warm and safe feeling, like sunshine. I love the line "Look at the stars/ Look how they shine for you" - it's a sweet way to tell a child they are loved. It's interesting to hear your partner's interpretation and how the song has a different meaning for your family. That's the beauty of music - it can be personal and connect with people in different ways. This is a lovely song that I'm sure your children will cherish. You should definitely keep writing lullabies!
