We Give Thee Thanks
Greening trees and roses red, Mountain streams and waterfall, Cats and cattle, eagles, mice – For our sake You made them all. We give Thee thanks, O Lord! For pantries that are always full, with extra to give to the poor; For having as much as our neighbors with credit on hand to get more-- We give Thee thanks, O Lord! For giving us Thy Holy Word so we can choose what to obey; For knowing when we need You near, and when we hope You'll look away: We give Thee thanks, O Lord! Good fortune we richly deserve; Wars that we righteously win; Peace we uphold by our might: These affirm that we are without sin. Beauty as deep as our skin, Our judgments, so wise and just, History taking our side, Show Your image is strongest in us. Disasters occurring far off; Hardships that on others fall; Sins in which others are snared: These confirm You love us most of all. We give Thee thanks, O Lord! We give Thee thanks, O Lord! Now and forevermore, Amen.

The Negative Square Root of Life
A child stretches their arms at the break of day. Six am is a wonderful time to play. The world is full of things that are a marvel. But then, a child’s mind is somewhat larval. There are important things to be done. Being told to do chores can cause a huff. Parents shrug their shoulders and say, “What can you do? The time to say farewell will come soon enough.”
